Merger-driven Growth of Intermediate-mass Black Holes: Constraints from Hubble Space Telescope Imaging of Hyper-luminous X-Ray Sources

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Hyper-luminous X-ray sources (HLXs) are extragalactic off-nuclear X-ray sources with luminosities exceeding the theoretical limit for accretion onto stellar-mass compact objects.

The kinematic signature of the inspiral phase of massive binary black holes

open access: yes, 2013
Supermassive black holes are expected to pair as a result of galaxy mergers, and form a bound binary at parsec or sub-parsec scales. These scales are unresolved even in nearby galaxies, and thus detection of non-active black hole binaries must rely on ...

Direct Evidence of Topological Dirac Fermions in a Low Carrier Density Correlated 5d Oxide

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The 5d oxide BiRe2O6 is discovered as a low‐carrier‐density topological semimetal hosting symmetry‐protected Dirac fermions stabilized by nonsymmorphic symmetries. Angle‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy, quantum oscillations, and magnetotransport measurements reveal gapless Dirac cones, quasi‐2D Fermi surfaces, high carrier mobility, and a field ...

Studying Binary Formation under Dynamical Friction Using Hill’s Problem

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Using the equations of motion from Hill’s problem, with added accelerations for different forms of dynamical friction, we provide the (to-date) broadest scale-free study of friction-driven binary formation in gaseous disks and stellar clusters.

Harnessing Non‐Covalent Protein–Protein Interaction Domains for Production of Biocatalytic Materials Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Non‐covalent protein–protein interactions mediated by SH3, PDZ, or GBD domains enable the self‐assembly of stable and biocatalytically active hydrogel materials. These soft materials can be processed into monodisperse foams that, once dried, exhibit enhanced mechanical stability and activity and are easily integrated into microstructured flow ...

Simulating ULXs and Blazars as GRMHD Accretion Flows Around a Black Hole

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
General relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations have been instrumental in our understanding of high-energy astrophysical phenomena over the past two decades.

Liquid Metals as Initiators of Free‐Radical Polymerization of Hydrogels: A Perspective

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Gallium‐based liquid metals initiate free radical polymerization to form hydrogels without the use of toxic molecular initiators. In addition to initiating polymerization, they can act as crosslinkers, yielding softer, more extensible, and tougher hydrogels than those formed with conventional initiators.

Overmassive Black Holes at Cosmic Noon: Linking the Local and the High-redshift Universe

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
We report for the first time a sample of 12 supermassive black holes (SMBHs) hosted by low-mass galaxies at cosmic noon, i.e., in a redshift range consistent with the peak of star formation history: z ∼ 1–3.

GW170608: Observation of a 19 Solar-mass Binary Black Hole Coalescence

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters, 2017
On 2017 June 8 at 02:01:16.49 UTC, a gravitational-wave (GW) signal from the merger of two stellar-mass black holes was observed by the two Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory detectors with a network signal-to-noise ratio of 13.
