Our Galaxy has four stellar populations: the disk, the thick disk, the bulge, and the halo. Did they form out of a single proto-Galactic nebula, with each population being but a different stage in the process? Or have at least some of them nothing to do with the origins and evolution of the others, as expected from mergers?

The discovery of luminous red nova (LRN) V1309 Sco revealed a binary star system prior to its outburst in brightness, with an exponentially decaying orbital separation.
