Stellar Spectral Types and the H-R Diagram

2021
We know stars are large balls of hot, glowing plasma fueled by the nuclear fusion occurring in their cores. This hot plasma emits blackbody radiation. At the surface of the star, the peak intensity in the spectrum corresponds to the surface temperature of the star. This peak in the spectrum correlates to a wavelength on the electromagnetic spectrum. As

A robust approach to estimate stellar angular diameters from photometry and spectral type

SPIE Proceedings, 2014
Observing reference stars with a known diameter is almost the only possibility to calibrate optical interferometry observations. The JMMC Calibrator Workgroup develops methods to ascertain the angular diameter of stars since 2000 and provides this expertise in the SearchCal software and associated databases.

Efficient stellar spectral type classification for SDSS based on nonnegative matrix factorization

SPIE Proceedings, 2007
The problem of identifying spectra collected by large sky survey telescope is urgent to study to help astronomers discover new celestial bodies. Due to spectral data characteristics of high-dimension and volume, principle component analysis (PCA) technique is commonly used for extracting features and saving operations.

The transfer of polarized radiation in spectral lines: Solar-type stellar atmospheres

Astrophysics and Space Science, 1984
The polarization structure in several spectral lines in solar type stars is computed using the method described by McKenna (1981, 1984a). The frequency redistribution function used for these calculations is a linear combination ofRII andRIII. The line profiles and polarization structures have been computed for several weak solar resonance lines ...

Spectral synthesis of CARMENES M-type stars: stellar atmospheric parameters

2019
We show our very first results regarding the stellar atmospheric parameter determinations (T_{eff} , log g, [Fe/H]) of M-type stars observed with CARMENES te{Carmenes} by means of the spectral synthesis method. We have selected spectral ranges around iron and titanium lines and molecular bands in three reference M-type stars: GX And (M1.0 V), Luyten's ...
