Abstract The distribution pattern of the connection length in the divertor region of Heliotron J was calculated by the field line tracing method. A multifold layer structure, characterized by the range of connection length, was revealed to interpret the response of the transport of the lower‐charged impurity ions to the divertor structure.

Quasi-Isodynamic Stellarators with Low Turbulence as Fusion Reactor Candidates
The stellarator is a type of fusion energy device that—if properly designed—could provide clean, safe, and abundant energy to the grid. To generate this energy, a stellarator must keep a hot mixture of charged particles (known as a plasma) sufficiently ...

Toward plasma drifts in EMC3: Implementation of gradient, divergence, and particle tracing schemes
Abstract This paper presents a first implementation of gradient, divergence, and particle tracing schemes for the EMC3 code, a stochastic 3D plasma fluid code widely employed for edge plasma and impurity transport modeling in tokamaks and stellarators.

The present research presents an innovative approach by integrating magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow with resistive heating, integrating a partly permeable layer and interior heat production to scrutinize natural convective flow within a square domain. It also examines both straight and wavy interfaces between the porous and fluid domains.

Near-surface expansion of vacuum stellarator configurations
Stellarators are inherently steady-state and disruption-free. However, three-dimensional geometry significantly increases the complexity of both equilibrium calculation and configuration optimization.

Stellarator plasmas are known to be very sensitive to perturbations in the magnetic field. The permanent magnet stellarator was in part developed as a solution to high machining tolerances placed on the shape properties of electromagnetic coils in ...

Gyrokinetic prediction of core tungsten peaking in a WEST plasma with nitrogen impurities
Tungsten peaking is predicted in the core of a WEST plasma with total-f gyrokinetic simulations, including both collisional and turbulent transport. This prediction is validated with a synthetic diagnostic of the bolometry.

Neutronics analysis of spin-polarized fuel in spherical tokamaks
The effect of spin-polarized deuterium–tritium fuel on the blanket, magnets, and surrounding structures is analyzed for a spherical tokamak fusion power plant.

This is a summary of my lectures during the 2011 IAC Winter School in Puerto de la Cruz. I give an introduction to the field of stellar populations in galaxies, and highlight some new results. Since the title of the Winter School was {\it Secular Evolution of Galaxies} I mostly concentrate on nearby galaxies, which are best suited to study this theme ...
