This is a summary of my lectures during the 2011 IAC Winter School in Puerto de la Cruz. I give an introduction to the field of stellar populations in galaxies, and highlight some new results. Since the title of the Winter School was {\it Secular Evolution of Galaxies} I mostly concentrate on nearby galaxies, which are best suited to study this theme ...

I review recent observational and theoretical progress in the study of condensations of cool material trapped in the coronae of rapidly rotating stars. Such condensations were discovered over a decade ago, producing transient moving absorption features in the optical Balmerseries lines.

Maximum-J Capability in a Quasi-Axisymmetric Stellarator
"Maximum-J (J is the second adiabatic invariant) capability, i.e., the radial derivative of J has the same sign as that of pressure, is investigated in a quasi-axisymmetric (QA) stellarator to investigate improved confinement. Due to the existence of non-

Economically optimized design point of high-field stellarator power-plant
High temperature superconductors (HTSs) expand the design space of stellarator power-plants (PPs) toward high magnetic fields B , enabling compact major radii R .

Fast Ion Loss and Radial Electric Field in Wendelstein VII-L Stellarator
Theoretical model is developed to determine the radial electric field and the fast ion loss simultaneously in stellarators, and is applied to the Wendelstein VII-A stellarator.

Stellarator fusion systems enabled by arrays of planar coils
We present an overview of a novel electromagnetic coil configuration for stellarators and its application to two near-term fusion systems. The novel coil configuration is the planar coil stellarator, able to implement precisely-quasisymmetric 3D magnetic

Stellar ages and stellar rotation
Stellar ages will play a big role in the next generation of astronomy. Useful to exoplaneteers and galactic archaeologists alike, this relatively under-exploited stellar property is currently limited by the precision of dating techniques. The work presented in this thesis contributes incrementally to a greater understanding of rotation period decay in ...

Drift waves in stellarator geometry
Drift waves are investigated in a real three-dimensional stellarator geometry. A linear system, based on the cold ion fluid model and a ballooning mode formalism, is solved numerically in the geometry of the stellarator H1-NF.
