Integration of kinetic ions in a three‐dimensional Monte‐Carlo neutral transport code

open access: yesContributions to Plasma Physics, Volume 60, Issue 5-6, June-July 2020., 2020
Abstract Charged particles of species different from the major constituents of a plasma might not reach local thermodynamic equilibrium during their lifespan. Such low collisional ions render the often‐used fluid description, assuming Maxwellian velocity distribution, as insufficient. Hence, kinetic treatment of such minorities becomes inevitable.

Stellarator coil optimization supporting multiple magnetic configurations

open access: yesNuclear Fusion, 2022
We present a technique that can be used to design stellarators with a high degree of experimental flexibility. For our purposes, flexibility is defined by the range of values the rotational transform can take on the magnetic axis of the vacuum field ...

Accelerated methods for direct computation of fusion alpha particle losses within, stellarator optimization

open access: yesJournal of Plasma Physics, 2020
Accelerated statistical computation of collisionless fusion alpha particle losses in stellarator configurations is presented based on direct guiding-centre orbit tracing. The approach relies on the combination of recently developed symplectic integrators

Stochastic and a posteriori optimization to mitigate coil manufacturing errors in stellarator design [PDF]

open access: yesPlasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, 2022
It was recently shown in Wechsung et al (2022 Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA 119 e2202084119) that there exist electromagnetic coils that generate magnetic fields, which are excellent approximations to quasi-symmetric fields and have very good particle ...

Adjoint methods for stellarator shape optimization and sensitivity analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Stellarators are a class of device for the magnetic confinement of plasmas without toroidal symmetry. As the confining magnetic field is produced by clever shaping of external electro-magnetic coils rather than through internal plasma currents ...

Optimization of the compact stellarator with simple coils at finite beta [PDF]

open access: yesPhysics of Plasmas
An optimized stellarator at finite plasma beta is realized by single-stage optimization by simply modifying the coil currents of the Compact Stellarator with Simple Coils (CSSC) [Yu et al., J. Plasma Phys. 88, 905880306 (2022)].

A flexible and differentiable coil proxy for stellarator equilibrium optimization [PDF]

open access: yesPhysics of Plasmas
Balancing plasma performance and coil cost is a significant challenge when designing a stellarator power plant. Most current stellarator designs are produced through two-stage optimization: stage-1 for the equilibrium and stage-2 for a coil design that ...

Curl-free magnetic fields for stellarator optimization [PDF]

open access: yesPhysics of Plasmas, 2019
This paper describes a new and efficient method of defining an annular region of a curl-free magnetic field with specific physics and coil properties that can be used in stellarator design.

The universal instability in optimised stellarators

open access: yesJournal of Plasma Physics, 2023
In tokamaks and neoclassically optimised stellarators, like Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) and the Helically Symmetric Experiment, turbulent transport is expected to be the dominant transport mechanism. Among the electrostatic instabilities that drive turbulence, the trapped-electron mode (TEM) has been shown both analytically and in simulations to be absent ...
