Resumption of traditional drive hunting of dolphins in the Solomon Islands in 2013 [PDF]

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2015
The ‘drive hunting’ of dolphins has a long history in the Solomon Islands, specifically at the island of Malaita. In 2010, the most active village, Fanalei, suspended hunting in exchange for financial compensation from an international non-governmental ...

First record of a white rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis) off West Africa including notes on rough-toothed dolphin surface behaviour [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
In June 2009, a white rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis) calf was photographed in a group of at least 50 dolphins in the southern Gulf of Guinea, 95 nauticol miles off the Gabon coast (01°45'S 007°29'E), West Africa. Reports of unusually pigmented

Development of the Skull of the Pantropical Spotted Dolphin (Stenella attenuata) [PDF]

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, 2011
AbstractWe describe the bony and cartilaginous structures of five fetal skulls of Stenella attenuata (pantropical spotted dolphin) specimens. The specimens represent early fetal life as suggested by the presence of rostral tactile hairs and the beginnings of skin pigmentation.

A Rapid Assessment of the Marine Megafauna Biodiversity Around South Bali, Indonesia

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2021
A low-cost, small-boat, rapid assessment survey was conducted on the waters off the southern Peninsula of Bali. The objectives were: (1) to conduct an inventory of cetacean species in the study area; (2) to map cetacean distribution to inform the design ...

Protein signaling and morphological development of the tail fluke in the embryonic beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas). [PDF]

open access: yesDev Dyn
Abstract Background During the land‐to‐sea transition of cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises), the hindlimbs were lost and replaced by an elaborate tail fluke that evolved 32 Ma. All modern cetaceans utilize flukes for lift‐based propulsion, and nothing is known of this organ's molecular origins during embryonic development.

Differences in oscillatory whistles produced by spinner (Stenella longirostris) and pantropical spotted (Stenella attenuata) dolphins [PDF]

open access: yesMarine Mammal Science, 2015
AbstractAcoustic recordings of two closely related species, spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris) and pantropical spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata), were investigated from four different geographic locations: two in the Central Tropical Pacific, one in the Eastern Tropical Pacific and one in the Indian Ocean.

Structure and phylogeography of two tropical predators, spinner (Stenella longirostris) and pantropical spotted (S. attenuata) dolphins, from SNP data [PDF]

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2018
Little is known about global patterns of genetic connectivity in pelagic dolphins, including how circumtropical pelagic dolphins spread globally following the rapid and recent radiation of the subfamily delphininae.

A survey of cetaceans found in Mayo Bay, Davao Oriental, Philippines

open access: yesDavao Research Journal, 2019
Cetaceans play an important role in marine ecosystems through the regulation of their prey population. Data on these organisms is scarce because of the difficulties in studying them in the wild.

Role of Crassicauda sp. in natural mortality of pantropical spotted dolphins Stenella attenuata: a reassessment [PDF]

open access: yesDiseases of Aquatic Organisms, 2014
Evaluating the effect of parasites on population size is essential for designing management and conservation plans of wild animal populations. Although knowledge in this area is scarce in cetaceans, current evidence suggests that species of the nematode genus Crassicauda may play an important regulatory role in some populations. In the present study, a
