Synchronous and Rhythmic Vocalizations and Correlated Underwater Behavior of Free-ranging Atlantic Spotted Dolphins (Stenella frontalis) and Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in the Bahamas [PDF]

open access: yesAnimal Behavior and Cognition, 2015
Since 1985 a resident community of Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis), and bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), have been studied underwater in the Bahamas.

From narrow and overlapped to wide and segregated: The isotopic niche of a tropical cetacean community

open access: yesEcological Indicators, 2023
Species in sympatry can coexist due to some degree of niche partitioning. Four cetacean species, Guiana (Sotalia guianensis), franciscana (Pontoporia blainvillei), Atlantic spotted (Stenella frontalis), and rough-toothed dolphins (Steno bredanensis ...

Models Incorporating Non‐Stationarity Improve Detection of Climate‐Driven Range Shifts in Odontocetes

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 32, Issue 2, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim Climate change is causing distributional shifts in many species globally. identifying and anticipating these shifts is critical to understanding ecosystem impacts and implementing successful management strategies. species distribution models (SDMs) are useful tools often employed to describe current and changing habitat use, particularly ...

Comparative Analysis of the Whistles of Three Oceanic Dolphins in the Comoros

open access: yesMarine Mammal Science, Volume 42, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT The Shisiwani National Park (Anjouan, Comoros) is a cetacean biodiversity hotspot. However, the vocal behavior of marine mammals inhabiting the area has never been studied. In 2023, we conducted a 400‐nautical‐mile survey from a 5‐m motorboat to determine their presence.

Close encounters of the friendly kind: pacific between‐group interactions in primates

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 100, Issue 6, Page 2257-2284, December 2025.
ABSTRACT While intergroup conflict features prominently in the behavioural ecology literature, its antonym, intergroup peace, has been a rather neglected phenomenon until recently. Neighbourly relations and affiliative interactions are far from uncommon.

Understanding causes of morbidity and mortality in Southern Hemisphere small Odontoceti: a scoping review

open access: yesMammal Review, Volume 55, Issue 2, April 2025.
This review identifies key causes of morbidity and mortality in Southern Hemisphere small Odontoceti, highlighting significant anthropogenic threats and the enhanced need for conservation strategies. Key findings include high rates of entanglements and a diverse range of infectious pathogens. Abstract Marine mammals serve as sentinels for environmental

Anomalous colouration in an Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis) from southeastern Brazil.

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Aquatic Science and Technology, 2013
This note report the first published account of atypical colouration condiction known as pied or piebald for the Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis).  The opportunistic sighting was made at close range between Cabo de São Tomé and Cabo Frio Campos Basin, southeastern Brazil, approximately 60 km offshore.
