This contribution tries to reintroduce Stereotomy within the field of “research by design”: the discipline, in fact, can be used as a means of re-composition of the design, project and execution phases. Starting from the origin of this break-up, the focus moves to the actual value of geometric and formal prefiguration and to the validity criteria that ...

Stereotomy of Wave Jointed Blocks
2016This paper focuses on developing a system for using 6-axis robotic arms to cut interlocking blocks with wire. Tracing the trajectory of stereotomy through millennia of practice, an extrapolation is presented that stereotomy will serve increased formal and structural complexity.

A great number of mosques, madrassas and hospitals compete with the enormous mausolea of the two gigantic historical necropolis of Cairo. The extraordinary Cairene domes have been the subject of really interesting studies. From the early historiography investigations to the most recent contributions, some of them focused on finding an explanation to ...

Notes on Guarini’s stereotomy: spherical vaults

De l’Orme’s Graphics Language: Between Stereotomy and Orthogonal Proto-Projection
2018Stereotomy has always been a subject matter of speculation by scholars who have been involved in Descriptive Geometry. It is well known, in fact, how the latter has its roots in the trait art. Part of proceedings that Gaspard Monge will theorize at the end of 18th century, were commonly used previously to solve dimensional and angular implicit problems
