Measuring the Daily Energy Expenditure of Free-Living Arctic Terns (Sterna paradisaea)

Auk, 1994
Measurement of the energy expenditure of freeliving birds plays an important role in many kinds of ecological and behavioral studies. For example, the concept of reproductive effort has become central to the study of the limits to reproductive output and, in particular, to whether and how effort can affect survival, future breeding attempts, and ...

Significant decline observed in Arctic Tern Sterna paradisaea population in northwest Greenland

Seabird Journal, 2017
Arctic Terns Sterna paradisaea are an understudied species in Greenland. Outside of the largest colonies, little is known about their current population status and no long-term annual monitoring program has been established. Previous surveys outside of key breeding colonies have been limited to a small number of colonies for single-season studies. This

Incubation behaviour of Arctic (Sterna paradisaea) and Antarctic (Sterna vittata) terns under disturbance by humans and predators

Polar Biology, 2023
Inkubační chování rybáka dlouhoocasého na Špicberkách a rybáka jižního v Antarktidě bylo studováno vždy na dvojicí lokalit lišících se intenzitou antropogenního vyrušování a predačním tlakem. Analýza 24-hodinových video záznamů ukázala celkově nižší přítomnost na hnízdě, kratší inkubační směny, kratší celkový čas věnovaný spánku, kratší úseky spánku a ...

Parasites of Common (Sterna hirundo) and Arctic (Sterna paradisaea) Terns (Charadriiformes, Laridae) in Karelia

Biology Bulletin, 2020
The fauna of parasites of Common (Sterna hirundo) and Arctic (Sterna paradisaea) terns obtained during the spring hunting period of 2013–2015 on the coast of Lake Ladoga has been studied. We found 15 species of parasites of various systematic groups: Cestoda (six species), Trematoda (four species), Nematoda (two species), Acanthocephala (two species ...

Responses of nesting Arctic terns (Sterna paradisaea) to disturbance by humans

Polar Biology, 2020
Nesting birds often respond to human disturbance as to a predatory act. In the case of the high Arctic, the disturbance of incubating birds may bring further complications due to egg cooling. In addition, it is assumed that birds in the high Arctic are not shy and do not respond to human presence fearfully.
