Less Invasive Mitral Valve Surgery via Right Minithoracotomy

open access: yesJournal of the Formosan Medical Association, 2006
Current trends in cardiac surgical intervention are moving toward less invasiveness, with smaller wound or sternum-sparing, less pump time or off-pump, and beating rather than arrested heart.

Putting the “P” Back in Delayed Fluorescence – Silylethynyl Substitution Generates Efficient Pyrene Annihilators for Red‐to‐Blue Photon Upconversion

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
P‐ or pyrene‐type delayed fluorescence is the original name of triplet‐triplet annihilation. However, pyrene is a poor annihilator. Silylethynyl substitution improves the energetics of pyrene and prevents excimer formation, enabling red‐to‐blue photon upconversion with 29% efficiency. We find tuning substituent steric bulk is key to achieving this high

Forced Straightening of the Back Does Not Improve Body Shape

open access: yesDiagnostics
Background: Sitting for a long time causes various postural problems, such as slump sitting. It has been reported that employing a corrected sitting position while lifting the sternum is effective in improving this form of posture.

Mg(SPh)2 as a Catalyst for Efficient Photocatalytic Alkylation Reactions of Active Methylene Compounds with Nonactivated Alkenes

open access: yesAdvanced Synthesis &Catalysis, Volume 367, Issue 5, March 4, 2025.
Abstract Mg(SPh)2 has been found to be a highly active catalyst in photocatalytic alkylation reactions of active methylene compounds with nonactivated alkenes. The desired reactions proceeded smoothly to afford the corresponding alkylated products in high yields with low catalyst loadings (0.2–0.3 mol%). This protocol is applicable to a continuous‐flow

Bilirubin Targeting WNK1 to Alleviate NLRP3‐Mediated Neuroinflammation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
At physiological concentrations, bilirubin binds to the kinase domain of WNK1, thereby augmenting its activity and facilitating the phosphorylation of downstream SPAK/OSR1. This phosphorylation inhibits KCC2 activity, leading to elevate intracellular chloride levels in neurons.

Morphogenesis of the Sternum in Quail Embryos [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
The flat bone develops through intramembranous ossification, in which the mesenchymal cells are directly driven towards osteogenic lineage without the formation of cartilage template. While long bone develops through endochondral ossification, where cartilage template act as an intermediate stage between mesenchymal and bone tissues. Although the avian

S‐ketamine Alleviates Neuroinflammation and Attenuates Lipopolysaccharide‐Induced Depression Via Targeting SIRT2

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
S‐ketamine binds directly to SIRT2, facilitating its interaction with NF‐κB p65. This interaction reduces the acetylation of NF‐κB p65 and inhibits its activation, thereby exerting anti‐inflammatory and antidepressant effects. Created by BioRender.

Plasmacytoma of the Sternum with Amyloid Deposition – A Cytological Diagnosis

open access: yesArchives of Medicine and Health Sciences
Plasmacytoma with amyloid deposition to be diagnosed on cytology is rare. In the absence of typical clinical presentation and radiological findings, the diagnosis of plasmacytoma may not be suspected.

Shear loading of costal cartilage [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2014
A series of tests were performed on a single post-mortem human subject at various length scales. First, tabletop tests were performed. Next, the ribs and intercostal muscles were tested with the view to characterize the load transfer between the ribs. Finally, the costal cartilage was tested under shear loading, as it plays an important in the transfer
