Naive model for stick-slip processes

This paper is a tutorial description of stick-slip in soft materials (rubber beads, gels) where inertial effects are negligible. A typical example is a rubber sphere, pressed against a glass surface (JKR contact). The sphere is driven from the top at a prescribed velocity U ( approximately 100 microm/s).

Source Parameters for Stick-Slip and for Earthquakes

Science, 1973
Source parameters of stick-slip friction events measured in the laboratory show particle and rupture propagation velocities which are similar to those observed for earthquakes and inferred from seismic source theory. This dynamic similarity strongly supports the idea that stick-slip is the mechanism for shallow earthquakes.

Stick-slip Oscillations in Resonant Power Converters

The paper presents evidence of the existence of stick-slip oscillations, usually found in mechanical systems with friction, in a class of resonant power converters. It is shown that these converters can exhibit periodic solutions characterized by segments of sliding motion (associated to theoretically infinitely many switchings).

The force required to pull sandpaper across a carpet fluctuates. Slips (sudden drops of magnitude M of the force) are observed to have a probability N(Mgm)\ensuremath{\sim}${\mathit{m}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{b}}$ with b\ensuremath{\simeq}0.8. The power spectrum of force fluctuations has a low-frequency 1/f behavior.

It is known that nonlinearities in the friction-velocity curves of dry friction may lead to instability of the steady frictional sliding, namely, friction-induced vibration. Frictional Dissipation in Stick-Slip Sliding

The time variation of the frictional force between two surfaces, undergoing stick-slip sliding across a molecularly thin film of a confined model liquid, was examined at high time and force resolution, showing clearly that dissipation of energy occurs both during the slip, and at the instant of stick (via transfer of residual momentum).

Stick-slip response in electrorheological fluids

Experimental observations of stick-slip friction are reported in an electrorheological fluid. The results are consistent with shear-induced phase transitions between solid and liquid phases. During the slip, there is a liquid flowing between two columnar solid phases.
