Systemic Arterial Stiffness in Glaucoma Patients

Journal of Glaucoma, 2008
To investigate systemic arterial stiffness in glaucoma patients. One hundred and forty glaucoma patients and 121 control subjects were enrolled in the study. Among these subjects, 51 glaucoma patients [normal-tension glaucoma (NTG), 31; primary open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension (POAG/OH): 20] and 61 control subjects without glaucoma, who ...

Convection Systems with Stiff Source Terms

Mathematical Models and Methods in Applied Sciences, 2003
The aim of this paper is the numerical treatment of some convection systems with stiff relaxation source-terms. We will first define the notion of stiffness for such systems and will select some prototypical and physical problems. We will introduce a new numerical method in order to solve accurately this type of systems.

Solving STIFF systems by Taylor series

Applied Mathematics and Computation, 1989
A new insight into the numerical solution of stiff systems of ODE's is brought by application of long Taylor series (up to 30 terms). Most of stiff problems are of the type where there is a linear ODE hidden within the stiff system of ODE's. When the hidden linear ODE is of order one, there is an exponential component in the solution.

An Initialization Program for Separably Stiff Systems

SIAM Journal on Scientific and Statistical Computing, 1983
Initialization of a separably stiff system of ordinary differential equations consists of readjusting certain initial values, while holding the others fixed, in such a way that the solution of the system does not have an initial transient. This paper discusses the features of a FORTRAN program which solves the initialization problem. The algorithm used

Stiff Mechanical System

2013
In the previous Chap. 5 we have seen how the spatial discretization of a flexible multibody system leads to a differential-algebraic equation in time. The partitioning into two types of state variables, namely, those for the gross motion, on the one hand, and those for the elastic deformations, on the other, quite often involves widely different time ...

Performance of a Stiff Support System in Soft Clay

Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, 2002
The performance of an excavation support system for a subway station renovation project in Chicago and its effects on an adjacent, shallow-foundation supported building are presented.

Simulation of stiff systems on real-time hardware

2018 7th Mediterranean Conference on Embedded Computing (MECO), 2018
Stiff systems are especially difficult for simulation on real-time hardware. This is mainly due to small numerical steps needed for the simulation of the fast changes in the model, which leads to a drastically reduced number of numerical solvers capable to function.

Validation of a switchable stiffness system for shock isolation

Proceedings of Meetings on Acoustics, 2010
The idea of a switchable stiffness device intended to provide improved shock isolation is presented. A control strategy in two stages, namely, the reduction of stiffness during a shock and the later suppression of residual vibration switching between minimum and maximum stiffness values is analyzed.

Balanced Implicit Methods for Stiff Stochastic Systems

SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, 1998
This paper addresses the need for numerical methods that accurately approximate the solution of a stiff system of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) where stiffness arises in the stochastic terms. First the solution of a one-dimensional stiff Itô SDE with multiplicative noise \[ dx_t= \sigma X_tdW_t \] is approximated by a new implicit method ...
