Extreme stiffness systems due to negative stiffness elements

American Journal of Physics, 2003
When an elastic object is pressed, we expect it to resist by exerting a restoring force. A reversal of this force corresponds to negative stiffness. If we combine elements with positive and negative stiffness in a composite, it is possible to achieve stiffness greater than (or less than) that of any of the constituents.

Convection Systems with Stiff Source Terms

Mathematical Models and Methods in Applied Sciences, 2003
The aim of this paper is the numerical treatment of some convection systems with stiff relaxation source-terms. We will first define the notion of stiffness for such systems and will select some prototypical and physical problems. We will introduce a new numerical method in order to solve accurately this type of systems.
