On the Strength Weakening Effect of Stiffening Ribs in the Design of Machine Components
Key Engineering Materials, 2019The bending stress in beams may often be reduced by adding material to the cross section. In some paradoxical cases, however, the bending stress increases by adding material from zones far away, or close to, the neutral axis. Similarly, the bending stress of rectilinear or curved beams may often be reduced by adding ribs to the initial beam section ...

Rib stiffened sound wave projector plate
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1996A rib-stiffened sound wave projector plate is disclosed which generates lowrequency sound waves in a fluid medium when energized and flexed. A flexible sound wave projector plate includes at least first and second parallel, major planar surfaces. The first major planar surface includes at least one set of sound wave projector plate ribs, disposed ...

Waves in a cylindrical shell stiffened by a helical rib
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1993In vacuo elastic wave propagation characteristics in an infinite cylindrical shell stiffened by an infinite helical rib are investigated analytically. Equations of motion of the helical rib and of the cylindrical shell in helical coordinates are developed.

Vibration Reduction in Plates with Joints and Stiffening Ribs
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1963Previous studies conducted in this laboratory on the vibrations of plates with joints were concerned primarily with rigid bar joints presenting essentially a one-dimensional constraint. Photographs of this system's nodal patterns clearly demonstrate transmission of those modes having nodal lines parallel to the joint, in agreement with theory, while ...

Elastic response of an acoustic coating on a rib-stiffened plate
Journal of Sound and Vibration, 2010This paper develops a three-dimensional analytical model of a fluid-loaded acoustic coating affixed to a rib-stiffened plate. The system is loaded by a plane wave that is harmonic both spatially and temporally. The model begins with Navier–Cauchy equations of motion for an elastic solid, which produces displacement fields that have unknown wave ...

Minimization of stresses in stiffening ribs of the cover of a water turbine
Journal of Machinery Manufacture and Reliability, 2014The procedure for optimum design of the contour of an opening in the stiffening ribs of the cover of a water turbine is proposed. The problem of nonlinear programming with the purpose of minimization of maximum stresses in the given structure is solved with the use of the gradient method.

Stiffness Analysis of Welded Spherical Joints with Rib Stiffeners
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2011Joint’s stiffness has important influence on stability bearing capacity of large-span spatial reticulated shell. The welded hollow spherical joint with rib stiffeners is a type of joint applied widely on large-span spatial reticulated shell. In this paper, the axial flexibility and flexural stiffness of welded hollow spherical joint with different rib ...

Extrusion of stiffening ribs on body parts with local heating
Vestnik Mashinostroeniya, 2021A scheme is proposed and analytical expressions are obtained for calculating the kinematics, pressure and damageability of the material during hot extrusion of ribs on body parts. The equations of states during creep, energy equilibrium, kinetics of material discontinuity are used. The calculation results are presented.

On the theory of layered anisotropic cylindrical shells stiffened with ribs
Polymer Mechanics, 1976The deformation, stability and vibration equations for anisotropic cylindrical shells stiffened with individual longitudinal and circumferential ribs are derived without introducing the hypothesis of nondeformable normals. The more general assumption adopted for layered materials (for example, glass-reinforced plastics) of a linear variation of the ...
