Stiff quantum polymers [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review B, 2007
At ultralow temperatures, polymers exhibit quantum behavior, which is calculated here for the second and fourth moments of the end-to-end distribution in the large-stiffness regime. The result should be measurable for polymers in wide optical traps.

Development of a personalized visualization and analysis tool to improve clinical care in complex multisystem diseases with application to scleroderma

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, Accepted Article.
Background In complex diseases, it is challenging to assess a patient's disease state, trajectory, treatment exposures, and risk of multiple outcomes simultaneously, efficiently and at the point of care. Methods We developed an interactive patient‐level data visualization and analysis tool (VAT) that automates illustration of a scleroderma patient's ...

Estimation of the normal contact stiffness for frictional interface in sticking and sliding conditions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Modeling of frictional contact systems with high accuracy needs the knowledge of several contact parameters, which are mainly related to the local phenomena at the contact interfaces and affect the complex dynamics of mechanical systems in a prominent ...

Effects of the Back Plate Inner Diameter on the Frictional Heat Input and General Performance of Brush Seals

open access: yesAerospace, 2018
Reducing losses in the secondary air system of gas and steam turbines can significantly increase the efficiency of such machines. Meanwhile, brush seals are a widely used alternative to labyrinth seals.

Stability of crack propagation during bending tests on brittle materials Estabilidade de propagação de trinca durante testes de flexão em materiais frágeis

open access: yesCerâmica, 2008
Applications of ceramic materials usually involve thermal stresses that can reduce their lifetime considerably. One of the most relevant mechanical properties for evaluating thermal shock damage resistance is the energy of fracture.

Using a Supramolecular Approach to Engineer Modular Hydrogel Platforms for Culturing Protoplasts – from General Tissue Engineering to Cellular Agriculture

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
Using supramolecular monomers, various hydrogel culture systems were formulated to culture protoplasts; including 2D, 2.5D, and 3D hydrogels. Depending on the culture platform, bioactive functionalization led to protoplast enlargement (2D and 2.5D) or plasmolysis (3D). This work shows the potential to modularly engineer synthetic platforms for cellular

Modelling Atherosclerotic Plaque Cap Mechanics: Microcalcifications Reduce Mechanical Properties in Mesenchymal Stromal Cell‐Based Model

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
This study develops a tissue‐engineered model of the atherosclerotic cap using human mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). After 2 weeks of culture to produce a collagenous matrix, a mineralizing medium induces microcalcifications over 4 weeks. These constructs, imaged with second harmonic generation microscopy, lead to reduced ultimate stress at rupture ...

Buckling of elastic filaments by discrete magnetic moments

open access: yes, 2017
We study the buckling of an idealized, semiflexible filament along whose contour magnetic moments are placed. {We give analytic expressions for the critical stiffness of the filament below which it buckles due to the magnetic compression.
