Dynamics and Development of the COVID-19 Epidemic in the United States: A Compartmental Model Enhanced With Deep Learning Techniques

open access: yesJournal of Medical Internet Research, 2020
BackgroundCompartmental models dominate epidemic modeling. Transmission parameters between compartments are typically estimated through stochastic parameterization processes that depends on detailed statistics of transmission characteristics, which are ...

Global Simulation of the Madden–Julian Oscillation With Stochastic Unified Convection Scheme

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2023
A new spectral convection scheme, the stochastic unified convection scheme (stochastic UNICON), is implemented in a general circulation model. The global climate simulation using stochastic UNICON is evaluated and compared with UNICON, focusing on the ...

A Simple Stochastic Parameterization for Reduced Models of Multiscale Dynamics [PDF]

open access: yesFluids, 2015
Multiscale dynamics are frequently present in real-world processes, such as the atmosphere-ocean and climate science. Because of time scale separation between a small set of slowly evolving variables and much larger set of rapidly changing variables, direct numerical simulations of such systems are difficult to carry out due to many dynamical variables

Stochastic Parameterization to Represent Variability and Extremes in Climate Modeling

open access: yesProcedia Computer Science, 2014
AbstractUnresolved sub-grid processes, those which are too small or dissipate too quickly to be captured within a model's spatial resolution, are not adequately parameterized by conventional numerical climate models. Sub-grid heterogeneity is lost in parameterizations that quantify only the ‘bulk effect’ of sub-grid dynamics on the resolved scales.

Evaluation of Mean State in NCEP Climate Forecast System (Version 2) Simulation Using a Stochastic Multicloud Model Calibrated With DYNAMO RADAR Data

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, 2021
Stochastic parameterizations are continuously providing promising simulations of unresolved atmospheric processes for global climate models (GCMs). One of the stochastic multi‐cloud model (SMCM) features is to mimic the life cycle of the three most ...

Stochastic Nature of Physical Parameterizations in Ensemble Prediction: A Stochastic Convection Approach

open access: yesMonthly Weather Review, 2008
Abstract In this paper it is argued that ensemble prediction systems can be devised in such a way that physical parameterizations of subgrid-scale motions are utilized in a stochastic manner, rather than in a deterministic way as is typically done.

A Stochastic Approach for Parameterizing Unresolved Scales in a System with Memory

open access: yesJournal of Algorithms & Computational Technology, 2009
Complex systems display variability over a broad range of spatial and temporal scales. Some scales are unresolved due to computational limitations. The impact of these unresolved scales on the resolved scales needs to be parameterized or taken into ...

Stochastic Methods and Complexity Science in Climate Research and Modeling

open access: yesFrontiers in Physics, 2022
The 2021 Nobel prize for physics was awarded to two climate scientists, Syukuro Manabe and Klaus Hasselmann, and the physicist Giorgio Parisi. While at first sight the work of Parisi seems not to be related to climate science, this is not the case ...

Machine learning unifies flexibility and efficiency of spinodal structure generation for stochastic biomaterial design

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
Porous biomaterials design for bone repair is still largely limited to regular structures (e.g. rod-based lattices), due to their easy parameterization and high controllability.
