Household sand filters for heavy metal removal exhibit limited nitrification and risk of nitrate contamination

open access: yesFrontiers in Water
High ammonium concentrations in groundwater (GW) pose substantial challenges to existing GW treatment systems, especially simplified systems like household sand filters (HSFs), which are commonly used for heavy metal removal in developing countries.

Fostering Innovation: Streamlining Magnetocaloric Materials Research by Digitalization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Magnetocaloric cooling (MCE) is an environmentally friendly refrigeration method with great potential. Optimizing MCE materials involves the preparation and screening of large quantities of samples, which in turn generates a large amount of data. A digitalization approach is presented that uses ontologies, knowledge graphs, and digital workflows to ...

Optimized Predictive Coverage by Averaging Time‐Windowed Bayesian Distributions

open access: yesWater Resources Research
Hydrogeological models require reliable uncertainty intervals that honestly reflect the total uncertainties of model predictions. The operation of a conventional Bayesian framework only produces realistic (interpretable in the context of the natural ...

Pandæsim: An Epidemic Spreading Stochastic Simulator

open access: yesBiology, 2020
Many methods have been used to model epidemic spreading. They include ordinary differential equation systems for globally homogeneous environments and partial differential equation systems to take into account spatial localisation and inhomogeneity ...

Quantifying Uncertainty in Land-Use/Land-Cover Classification Accuracy: A Stochastic Simulation Approach

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Science, 2021
In numerous applications of land-use/land-cover (LULC) classification, the classification rules are determined using a set of training data; thus, the results are inherently affected by uncertainty in the selection of those data.

A Survey of Stochastic Simulation and Optimization Methods in Signal Processing [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Journal on Selected Topics in Signal Processing, 2015
Modern signal processing (SP) methods rely very heavily on probability and statistics to solve challenging SP problems. SP methods are now expected to deal with ever more complex models, requiring ever more sophisticated computational inference ...

Ontology‐Aligned Structuring and Reuse of Multimodal Materials Data and Workflows Toward Automatic Reproduction

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Reproduction of stacking fault energy calculations from literature with a semi‐automated large language model‐assisted extraction procedure: extraction of simulation protocol, atomistic structures, computational parameters, and reported results, ontology alignment, knowledge graph construction and, finally, recomputation forvalidation.

Enhancing Bubble Removal in Geometry‐Optimized Electrodes

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
3D‐printed lattice electrodes outperform stochastic foams in alkaline water electrolysis despite 20%–25% lower surface area. Straight flow channels generate Venturi‐like bubble entrainment, suppressing gas accumulation that renders foam interiors electrochemically inactive.
