Food for Thought : Eastern Baltic cod in distress: biological changes and challenges for stock assessment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The eastern Baltic (EB) cod (Gadus morhua) stock was depleted and overexploited for decades until the mid-2000s, when fishing mortality rapidly declined and biomass started to increase, as shown by stock assessments.

PARP inhibition and pharmacological ascorbate demonstrate synergy in castration‐resistant prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pharmacologic ascorbate (vitamin C) increases ROS, disrupts cellular metabolism, and induces DNA damage in CRPC cells. These effects sensitize tumors to PARP inhibition, producing synergistic growth suppression with olaparib in vitro and significantly delayed tumor progression in vivo. Pyruvate rescue confirms ROS‐dependent activity.

Nuclear Multi‐Microsatellite Marker Profiling Provides Clues to Molecular Genetic Diversity in Culture‐Based Caspian Beluga Sturgeon (Huso huso) Brood Stocks: Ecological Mirror for Restoration

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science
The decreasing natural genetic diversity within intense beluga sturgeon aquaculture presents a complex challenge for culture‐based sturgeon stocks. The present report aims to assess the situation by utilizing advanced capillary electrophoresis (CE) and ...

Plecstatin inhibits hepatocellular carcinoma tumorigenesis and invasion through cytolinker plectin

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The ruthenium‐based metallodrug plecstatin exerts its anticancer effect in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) primarily through selective targeting of plectin. By disrupting plectin‐mediated cytoskeletal organization, plecstatin inhibits anchorage‐dependent growth, cell polarization, and tumor cell dissemination.

Considering Other Consumers: Fisheries, Predators, and Atlantic Herring in the Gulf of Maine

open access: yesEcology and Society, 2003
After decades of overexploitation and severe depletion, Atlantic herring stocks in waters of the northeastern United States have recovered. Fishery managers now consider the herring resource to be underexploited.
