Mixed‐class J‐domain protein scaffolds promote expanded aggregate handling and multivalent Hsp70 engagement during functional disaggregase assembly

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein aggregates threaten proteostasis and cell health. In human cells, Hsp70–J‐domain protein‐based disaggregases remove aggregates, but how they assemble remains unclear. Our biochemical findings show that DNAJA2‐ and DNAJB1‐containing disaggregase scaffolds enhance luciferase aggregate targeting, and that Hsp70 recruitment by both J‐domain ...

STOICHIOMETRY: LINKING ELEMENTS TO BIOCHEMICALS [PDF]

open access: yesEcology, 2004
Ecological stoichiometry is a useful tool for studying how the elemental composition of organisms and their food affects production, nutrient cycling, and food- web dynamics. Two analyses are presented here that show that the use of simple element ratios in stoichiometric calculations may in certain circumstances prove inadequate because of the ...

C2α‐carbanion‐protonating glutamate discloses tradeoffs between substrate accommodation and reaction rate in actinobacterial 2‐hydroxyacyl‐CoA lyase

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Enzymes of the 2‐hydroxyacyl‐CoA lyase group catalyze the condensation of formyl‐CoA with aldehydes or ketones. Thus, by structural adaptation of active sites, practically any pharmaceutically and industrially important 2‐hydroxyacid could be biotechnologically synthesized. Combining crystal structure analysis, active site mutations and kinetic assays,

Changes and Relationships between Components in the Plant-Soil System and the Dominant Plant Functional Groups in Alpine Kobresia Meadows Due to Overgrazing

open access: yesDiversity, 2022
In the last several decades, overgrazing has led to various changes in the plant communities, soil nutrients and soil microbial communities in alpine Kobresia meadows, which contain various plant communities coexisting on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau ...

YIPFα1A expression is regulated by multilayered molecular mechanisms

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
YIPFα1A, a five‐pass Golgi protein, is regulated at multiple layers. (1) Rare‐codon enrichment drives translation‐coupled mRNA decay. (2) A proximal 3′‐UTR element stabilizes mRNA. (3) A distal 3′‐UTR element included by alternate poly(A) site usage represses translation, which can be overridden by the proximal 3′‐UTR element.

Stoichiometry

open access: yes, 2014
Stoichiometry is the branch of chemistry that deals with reacting amounts. It can be used to describe the amount of chemical present and also to predict the how much product is formed in a reaction. Central to stoichiometry is the SI unit of the amount of substance—the mole—which is defined using Avogadro's number.

How increased atmospheric carbon dioxide and ‘The Law of the Minimum’ are contributing to environmental obesity

open access: yesActa Limnologica Brasiliensia, 2019
Justus von Liebig observed that one could greatly increase agricultural yields by adding relatively small quantities of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) to soils. This finding led to the most recent agricultural revolution. But because most

Molecular characterization of covRS mutations in M1UK Streptococcus pyogenes

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Group A Streptococcus (GAS) acquires covRS mutations driving a hypervirulent bacterial state, frequently associated with invasive disease‐like necrotizing fasciitis. We demonstrate that the newly emerged M1UK GAS lineage can also acquire these mutations.

The use of SEM/EDS method in mineralogical analysis of ordinary chondritic meteorite

open access: yesGeologija, 2009
The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersiveX-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) for determination of mineral phases according to their stoichiometry and assessment of mineral composition of ...

Stoichiometry on the edge—humans induce strong imbalances of reactive C:N:P ratios in streams

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2023
Anthropogenic nutrient inputs led to severe degradation of surface water resources, affecting aquatic ecosystem health and functioning. Ecosystem functions such as nutrient cycling and ecosystem metabolism are not only affected by the over-abundance of a
