Penalty approximation of stokes flow

Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering, 1982
Abstract The particular class of problems considered is Stokes flow in which the constraint is the incompressibility condition ▽ · u = 0 on the velocity field u . In Part I we present first of all a simple constructive method for determining the spurious modes.

The separation of Stokes flows

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1977
A study is made of the extent to which local boundary geometry can influence separation in a two-dimensional or an axisymmetric Stokes flow. It is shown that a Stokes flow can separate from a point on a smooth body at an arbitrary angle, which can be determined only by reference to the global solution for the flow past the body, and the dominant mode ...

Stokes Flow in Conical Trenches

SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, 1978
In this paper we develop a separation of variables theory, for solving problems of Stokes flow in cone-shaped trenches formed as the intersection of a cone of circular cross-section and a spherical shell centered at the vertex of the cone. The theory leads to a new set of Stokes flow eigenfunctions which describe axisymmetric motions in the vertex of a

Stokes Flow in an Annular Region

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1970
We consider the steady-state parallel flow of a homogeneous viscous liquid in the annular region between concentric cylinders at low Reynolds numbers. The linearized equations are solved by expansions in terms of suitable eigenfunctions. The main features of the flow, including velocity profiles, are calculated numerically.

Stokes Flow: An Elementary Treatment

SIAM Review, 1989
Summary: Similarity considerations are used to examine the problem of Stokes flow past a sphere. A complete solution for the velocity, vorticity, and pressure fields is constructed in an elementary way via the use, at one point, of a simple functional equation.
