New opportunities for grassland species in warming temperate winters

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Temperate winters are getting warmer, the length of the growing season is increasing and mid‐winter fluctuations of warm and freezing temperatures are more frequent. Although typically winter dormant, some herbaceous perennials can maintain or grow green leaves during ...

Translocation of Glyphosate in Strawberry Stolons

open access: yesHortScience, 1985
Abstract Field growing nonfruiting strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa Duch. ‘Midway’) were treated with (methyl-14C) glyphosate (N-(phosphono-methyl)glycine] applied to the leaves of runner plants rapidly developing at the nodes of stolons. Seven days after application, 14C was distributed throughout the stolon and untreated new runner plants.

Ethylene-induced Tropism of Trifolium fragiferum L. Stolons [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Physiology, 1974
The hypothesis that ethylene regulates prostrate stem growth was investigated using stolons of strawberry clover (Trifolium fragiferum L. var. Salina). Stolons became erect when treated with ethylene or 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid. Curvature was visibly detectable 2 hours after ethylene treatment, and subsequent stem elongation was rapid. Indoleacetic

1166. Helianthus occidentalis Riddell

open access: yesCurtis's Botanical Magazine, EarlyView.
Summary Helianthus occidentalis Riddell (Compositae: Heliantheae: Helianthinae) is described and illustrated. The species' placement in the genus is commented on, as are the differences in infrageneric placement of the other species Heiser originally grouped H. occidentalis with.

Changes in sward structure, plant morphology and growth of perennial ryegrass–white clover swards over winter

open access: yesIrish Journal of Agricultural and Food Research, 2021
White clover (Trifolium repens L.) is at a disadvantage to perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.; PRG) due to its limited cold tolerance and low growth rates at colder temperatures, which can affect subsequent spring herbage dry matter (DM) availability.

De novo stolon organogenesis in potato leaf callus elicited by Agrobacterium tumefaciens stimulus

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Plant Biology, EarlyView.
Agrobacterium tumefaciens triggers stolon regeneration from potato leaf callus independent of T‐DNA insertion, suggesting a strategy to reprogram callus identity and expand the potential of tissue regeneration. ABSTRACT Plant cells can undergo cellular reprogramming, enabling pluripotent callus formation from excised leaves.

The tissue structure of the vegetative organs of strawberry (Fragaria moschata Duch®)

open access: yesInternational Journal of Horticultural Science, 2000
The tissue structure of the vegetative organs of strawberry (root, rhizome, stolon, leaf) is discussed in this paper. The authors stated that the root structure described by Muromcev (1969) and Naumann-Seip (1989) develops further from the primary ...

WinRHIZO Technology for Measuring Morphological Traits of Bermudagrass Stolons [PDF]

open access: yesAgronomy Journal, 2017
Core Ideas WinRHIZO technology may provide a method to analyze stolon morphology of grasses. The scanned length closely predicted the manually measured one. WinRHIZO technology overestimated diameter when the whole stolon was scanned. WinRHIZO, a root‐measuring system, may provide an alternative, reliable, and fast method to analyze stolon morphology ...

Adapting the growth‐form concept to geniculate coralline algae (Corallinales, Rhodophyta)

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, EarlyView.
Abstract Geniculate coralline algae (Corallinales, Rhodophyta) are a diverse group of calcifying macroalgae, loosely united by flexible upright axes formed by alternating calcified (intergenicula) and uncalcified segments (genicula), a trait that has independently arisen several times.
