Repurposing antimicrobial agents for neuroprotection: Mechanisms, clinical potential, and challenges

open access: yesNeuroprotection, EarlyView.
Antimicrobial agents exert neuroprotective effects through modulation of interconnected pathways. Tetracyclines, macrolides, antimalarial agents, sulfones, and antiparasitic agents suppress neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and apoptosis while preserving mitochondrial function and neurotransmission.

Physiological Emergency Surgery Acuity Score Predicts Mortality and Anastomotic Leak in Emergency Laparotomy: An External Validation Study

open access: yesWorld Journal of Surgery, EarlyView.
PESAS demonstrates good discrimination, calibration‐in‐the‐large, and net benefit as an ordinal risk stratification tool for prediction of 30‐day mortality among patients undergoing emergency laparotomy, with exploratory analysis suggesting promise for predicting anastomotic leak.

The Evolution in Understanding the Physiological Causes of Dyspnoea in Large Hiatal Herniation: A Narrative Review

open access: yesANZ Journal of Surgery, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background The symptomatology of large hiatus hernia (LHH) has been historically poorly understood, with cardiorespiratory symptoms caused by LHH being underappreciated by clinicians. This study reports on the mechanisms of dyspnoea in LHH through a historical review of symptoms and evolved physiological literature, discussing likely causation.

Bowel Obstruction/Ileus Associated With the Use of Glucagon‐Like Peptide‐1 Receptor Agonists: A Nationwide Database Study

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aims The association between glucagon‐like peptide‐1 receptor agonist (GLP‐1RA) use and the development of bowel obstruction/ileus remains unclear, and evidence for specific bowel obstruction/ileus subtypes remains limited. We examined the association between GLP‐1RA use and the incidence of bowel obstruction/ileus subtypes across different ...
