Ontogenetic changes in stomatal size and conductance of sunflowers
Ecological Research, 1992Abstract The ontogenetic changes in stomatal size, frequency and conductance (g s ) on abaxial and adaxial leaf surfaces of sunflower plants ( Helianthus annuus L.

ABSTRACTMaximum stomatal conductance to water vapour and CO2 (gwmax, gcmax, respectively), which are set at the time of leaf maturity, are determined predominantly by stomatal size (S) and density (D). In theory, many combinations of S and D yield the same gwmax and gcmax, so there is no inherent correlation between S and D, or between S, D and maximum

Size selectivity of aqueous pores in stomatous cuticles of Vicia faba leaves
Planta, 2005Size selectivity of aqueous pores in Vicia leaf cuticles was investigated by measuring the penetration of calcium salts into the abaxial surface of detached leaves. Molecular weights of salts ranged from 111 g mol(-1) to 755 g mol(-1). Penetration in light at 20 degrees C and 100% humidity was a first order process and rate constants of penetration ...

Ploidal Level and Stomatal Size in the American Hickories
Brittonia, 1961The chromosome numbers of two diploid species—Cary a aquatica (n = 16), andC. illinoensis (n = 16)—and one tetraploid—C. texana (2n = 64)—are recorded for the first time. Counts ofn = 16 and 2n = 32 forC. cordiformis and2n = 64 forC. tomentosa confirm earlier reports. Positive correlations were validated between ploidal level and stomatal size.

The relationship between stomatal size and transpiration or photosynthetic rate (apparent photosynthetic rate) was studied. A Ieaf with high stomatal frequency did not necessarily have small stomates. Transpiration rate per stoma increased with the increase of stomatal size but it was not directly proportional to the stomatal size but to (stomatal size)

Genotypic, intraplant, and environmental variation in stomatal frequency and size in wheat
Canadian Journal of Plant Science, 1993Stomatal characteristics are of interest in physiological studies and in the development of cultivars to improve productivity or stress resistance. In wheat (Triticum spp.) previous studies show contradictory results for intraplant variation in stomatal frequency and size.

Stomatal Size in Fossil Plants: Evidence for Polyploidy in Majority of Angiosperms
Science, 1994Three published estimates of the frequency of polyploidy in angiosperms (30 to 35 percent, 47 percent, and 70 to 80 percent) were tested by estimating the genome size of extinct woody angiosperms with the use of fossil guard cell size as a proxy for cellular DNA content.

Trees Increase Stomatal Size or Density After Defoliation to Enhance Gas Exchange
Plant, Cell & EnvironmentSummary Statement After defoliation, trees increase stomatal size or density of re‐flush leaves, boosting gas exchange but potentially increasing minimum leaf conductance. These changes are associated with both altered environmental conditions and reduced carbohydrate reserve status during re‐flush.
