The medusa of Aurelia coerulea is similar to its polyp in molecular composition and different from the medusa of Stomolophus meleagris in toxicity

Toxicon, 2022
The incidents of Aurelia sp. stinging have recently increased because of a bloom in offshore area. However, their symptoms are much milder than those from another scyphozoan jellyfish, Stomolophus meleagris. The molecular composition of the medusa and polyp of Aurelia coerulea was analyzed by sequencing the transcriptome and proteome.

Isolation, identification and characterization of a novel antioxidant protein from the nematocyst of the jellyfish Stomolophus meleagris

International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, 2012
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) can damage the lipids, proteins and DNA when produced excessively in cells. Here, we describe the isolation and identification of a novel antioxidant protein named SmP90 from the nematocyst of jellyfish Stomolophus meleagris by 50% ammonium sulfate precipitation and gel filtration chromatography, superdex75.

Inorganic Constituents in Fresh and Processed Cannonball Jellyfish (Stomolophus meleagris)

Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 1996
Cannonball jellyfish (Stomolophus meleagris) from the Gulf of Mexico has been under investigation as a potential source to meet the market demand for jellyfish food in Asia. Traditionally, jellyfish are processed by curing fresh jellyfish with salt and alum, and then the cured jellyfish are desalted in water before consumption.

Exploring the feasibility of developing novel gelatin powders from salted, dried cannonball jellyfish (Stomolophus meleagris)

Food Bioscience, 2021
Abstract Cannonball jellyfish, often commercialized as salted, dried jellyfish (SDJ), is an emerging fishery in the USA and a great source of collagen, which can be utilized for developing novel marine gelatin powders. The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility of producing gelatin powders with gelling properties from SDJ using a mild ...

Isolation and in vitro partial characterization of hemolytic proteins from the nematocyst venom of the jellyfish Stomolophus meleagris

Toxicology in Vitro, 2013
Jellyfish venom contains various toxins and can cause itching, edema, muscle aches, shortness of breath, blood pressure depression, shock or even death after being stung. Hemolytic protein is one of the most hazardous components in the venom. The present study investigated the hemolytic activity of the nematocyst venom from jellyfish Stomolophus ...

Jellyfish venomics and venom gland transcriptomics analysis of Stomolophus meleagris to reveal the toxins associated with sting

Journal of Proteomics, 2014
Jellyfish Stomolophus meleagris is a very dangerous animal because of its strong toxicity. However, the composition of the venom is still unclear. Both proteomics and transcriptomics approaches were applied in present study to investigate the major components and their possible relationships to the sting. The proteomics of the venom from S.

Preliminary Characterization of a Blue Pigment Extracted from “Cannon Ball” Jellyfish Stomolophus meleagris

Russian Journal of Marine Biology, 2018
Due to consumers’demand for natural pigments new sources have been explored, the marine environment among others. This paper studied the optimal extraction conditions and preliminary characterized a blue pigment obtained from Stomolophus meleagris jellyfish. Specimens were collected from State of Sonora seashore, at the Gulf of California, Mexico.

Evaluation of digestive capacity in the polyp, ephyrae, and medusae stages of the cannonball jellyfish Stomolophus meleagris

Hydrobiologia, 2018
The digestive capacity of jellyfish has barely been studied because of the complexity of their life stage body-forms and sizes. To assess the digestive capacity in the changes from the benthic polyp-form to the pelagic stage in the cannonball jellyfish Stomolophus meleagris, we used fluorometric and spectrophotometric techniques for measuring the ...

Costs of transport for the scyphomedusa Stomolophus meleagris L. Agassiz

Canadian Journal of Zoology, 1987
The rhizostome scyphomedusa Stomolophus meleagris swims continuously at speeds up to 15 cm∙s−1. Mean velocities increased as a power function of wet weight up to 70 g but were mostly constant thereafter. Bell pulsations ranged from 1.7 to 3.6 Hz. Reynolds numbers equalled 900 – 13 000. During activity, medusae consumed 0.05 mL O2∙h−1∙g WW−1 (1.2 mL O2∙
