Genetic code development by stop codon takeover

Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1988
A novel theoretical consideration of the origin and evolution of the genetic code is presented. Code development is viewed from the perspective of simultaneously evolving codons, anticodons and amino acids. Early code structure was determined primarily by thermodynamic stability considerations, requiring simplicity in primordial codes.

Regulated translational bypass of stop codons in yeast

Trends in Microbiology, 2007
Stop codons are used to signal the ribosome to terminate the decoding of an mRNA template. Recent studies on translation termination in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae have not only enabled the identification of the key components of the termination machinery, but have also revealed several regulatory mechanisms that might enable the controlled ...

In vitro suppression of two different stop codons

Biotechnology and Bioengineering, 2016
ABSTRACTProteins play a crucial role in all living organisms, with the 20 natural amino acids as their building blocks. Unnatural amino acids are synthetic derivatives of these natural building blocks. These amino acids have unique chemical or physical properties as a result of their specific side chain residues.

Cancer syndromes and therapy by stop-codon readthrough

Trends in Molecular Medicine, 2012
Several hereditary cancer syndromes are associated with nonsense mutations that create premature termination codons (PTC). Therapeutic strategies involving readthrough induction partially restore expression of proteins with normal function from nonsense-mutated genes, and small molecules such as aminoglycosides and PTC124 have exhibited promising ...
