Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

A novel natural insecticide molecule for grain protection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We have isolated a novel bioactive molecule from the roots of Decalepis hamiltonii that shows insecticidal properties against the stored-product insects Sitophilus oryzae, Rhyzopertha dominica and Callosobruchus chinensis by contact bioassay (LC50: 0.033-

Versatile vector tools for efficient protein screening across multiple expression systems

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
A unified vector toolkit enables rapid protein expression screening across E. coli, insect, and mammalian cells. A single primer pair amplifies the target gene, which is inserted into any vector via a standardized interface. This streamlined workflow eliminates repeated cloning steps, accelerating the identification of optimal expression conditions for

Global establishment risk of stored products beetles: Poster [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Stored-product beetles were regarded as some of the most important stored-product pests in the world. Predicting which one in hundreds of potential invasive stored-product beetles is the most likely to invade a region presents a significant challenge.

ATZ‐1 promotes DNA replication efficiency to maintain normal meiotic function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Absence of ATZ‐1 interferes with meiotic DNA replication and cell cycle function via CHK‐1. This causes downstream defects associated with DNA damage and genomic integrity. Taken together, this study suggests that ATZ‐1 influences DNA replication efficiency and cell cycle function to maintain normal meiotic function.

Early detection of insect infestation in stored grain based on head space analysis of volatile compounds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Insect infestation is a common problem for stored grain. Insects can cause quantitative losses as kernels are consumed by insects. Also, the appearance and organoleptic properties can be altered through physical damage and contamination by faeces ...

Coordinated Architectural and Chemical Reinforcement in the Crushing Mandible of a Soldier Termite

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The crushing mandible of a soldier termite withstands substantial biting loads despite lacking mineral. Its cuticle is partitioned: convex teeth pair hardness and zinc enrichment with aligned chitin fibers for contact durability, while stiffer concave regions between teeth carry bending loads.
