A Variational Beam Model for Failure of Cellular and Truss‐Based Architected Materials
Herein, a versatile and efficient beam modeling framework is developed to predict the nonlinear response and failure of cellular, truss‐based, and woven architected materials. It enables the exploration of their design space and the optimization of their mechanical behavior in the nonlinear regime. A variational formulation of a beam model is presented

A numerical scheme is presented to design a lattice support for metallic components additively built via laser powder bed fusion. Results show that thermal‐induced distortion can be respectively reduced by 69%, 58%, and 50% in comparison to a uniform lattice, a fully solid support, and a truss‐based lattice support.

Specular Andreev reflection of asymmetric fermions in graphene under strain [PDF]
This work investigates the effect of the uniaxial strain on the tunneling conductance in a strained graphene superconductor where strain is applied in the armchair direction. Based on the Tight-Binding model, applying strain in the armchair direction gives rise to the asymmetric massless fermions as the carriers.

Multiplying decomposition of stress/strain, constitutive/compliance relations, and strain energy [PDF]
To account for phenomenological theories and a set of invariants, stress and strain are usually decomposed into a pair of pressure and deviatoric stress and a pair of volumetric strain and deviatoric strain. However, the conventional decomposition method only focuses on individual stress and strain, so that cannot be directly applied to either ...

The paper presents the numerical analysis of stress and strain occurring in the most wearable parts of hip and knee joints endoprostheses. The complexity of the processes taking place in both, natural and artificial joints, makes it necessary to conduct ...

DSS-14 subreflector actuator dynamics during the Landers earthquake [PDF]
The 28 Jun. 1992 Landers earthquake ground motion records at the Echo site (DSS-12 antenna) were adjusted to provide a better match with spectra from the measured Mars site (DSS-14 antenna) instrument tower response. A finite-element model of the antenna

Understanding and measuring mechanical signals in the tumor stroma
This review discusses cancer‐associated fibroblast subtypes and their functions, particularly in relation to extracellular matrix production, as well as the development of 3D models to study tumor stroma mechanics in vitro. Several quantitative techniques to measure tissue mechanical properties are also described, to emphasize the diagnostic and ...

Architected Lattices with a Topological Transition
This article develops topological metamaterials showing multidirectional two‐step deformation under compression by embedding contact‐enabled topological mechanisms into lattice structures. Experiments on 3D‐printed 2D and 3D lattices and finite element simulations are conducted to demonstrate the working principle of the topological metamaterials.
