Strain localization and porphyroclast rotation
Geology, 2011It has been debated for decades whether rigid inclusions, such as porphyroclasts and porphyroblasts, do or do not rotate in a softer matrix during deformation. Experiments and numerical simulations with viscous matrix rheologies show ongoing rotation of circular inclusions, whereas using Mohr-Coulomb plasticity results in nonrotation. Because the rocks

Strain localization in amorphous metals
Acta Metallurgica, 1982Abstract Inhomogeneous flow in metallic glasses is studied in this paper within the context of continuum mechanics. Motivated by similar work for elastic-plastic solids, the possibility of strain localization into a shear band is investigated for a metallic glass which is modelled as a nonlinear viscoelastic solid.

Atomic Mobility and Strain Localization in Amorphous Metals
Physical Review Letters, 2008Molecular dynamics simulations are employed to investigate the atomic mobility in Ni(50)Zr(50) amorphous alloys under both static conditions and shearing. Diffusion occurs under static conditions via cooperative stringlike motion involving atoms with large volumes.

Strain localization and member ductility
2021In metals, plastic strain localization occurs not only within a broad range of materials but also under different loading conditions and applications. The mechanism of plastic strain localization plays an important role in the processes of plastic deformation of materials and thus the suitability of a given material for a specific structural ...

Local Phonons in Strained Superlattices
1993Calculations based on a planar force-constant model for strained-layer superlattices (SLSs) are presented. The calculations are compared with the experimental results of Raman scattering by optical phonons in GaP/InP and AlAs/InAs SLSs. The local character of some of the optical phonons of these superlattices has been used to study the electronic ...

Plastic Deformation and Strain Localizations
2020This chapter gives an overview of basic knowledge on plastic deformation and strain localizations. The chapter starts with general remarks on plastic deformation continuing with details on deformation mechanisms such as dislocation glide and twinning were shortly summarized focusing for most common crystal lattices in metallic materials: (i) face ...

On brittle-ductile strain localization
2020<p>The classification of the strain localization modes is attempted around brittle-ductile transition. The stresses are high. The are a number of suspects: earthquake-like thermal runaway (Braeck et al. 2009), stable sliding as shear heating zones oriented 45 degrees to the principal stresses (Kiss et al.
