Strain-Rate Selection in the Constant-Rate-of-Strain Consolidation Test

Constant-rate-of-strain (CRS) consolidation tests were performed on remolded kaolinite specimens. The effect of strain rate on CRS test data is shown. A relation between soil parameters and strain rate was developed and used to formulate a strain-rate selection procedure.

Strain Rate Sensitivity of Flow Stress at Very High Rates of Strain

In order to clarify the mechanism of the steep rise in the flow stress, widely seen in metallic materials at strain rates above about 5×103/sec, two strain rate change tests were conducted. The strain rate reduction test was made for polycrystalline aluminium, copper, iron and niobium at strain rates up to about 2×104/sec.

Strain Hardening and ‘Strain-Rate Hardening’

The limitations of power-law strain hardening and ‘strain-rate hardening’ descriptions are reviewed. It is found that significant advantages can be gained by using, instead, the Voce relation, especially in the proposed modification that accounts for the rate sensitivities of flow stress and of strain hardening.

Both Oxygen Free High Conductivity (OFHC) copper and Electrolytic Tough Pitch (ETP) copper were studied.
