Interferometric fiber strain sensor

2012 IEEE 3rd International Conference on Photonics, 2012
This paper proposed a strain sensing system using two-stage optical low coherence Mach-Zehnder interferometry. A 1.3-μm wavelength distributed feedback laser for an optical ruler assisted stepper motor was implemented to achieve 19.3-nm resolved characterization. The interferogram calibrated by the stepper motor combined with optical ruler on a 3-meter

Wide-range fiber-optic strain sensor

Applied Optics, 1984
A wide-range strain sensor which utilizes optical fiber as the transducing element is reported. This device differs from the well-known microbend type sensor in that a roller chain is used to impose constant curvature bends on the fiber, rather than a corrugated plate which imposes sinusoidal bends in the microbend sensors.

Optical diffraction strain sensor

SPIE Proceedings, 2004
Moire interferometry is a high sensitivity tool for deformation measurement. Micro-moire interferometry (MMI) extends this into the micron-level spatial resolution. However, the information available in both cases is in the form of a deformation map, which needs to be differentiated to determine strains.

Fiber Grating Strain Sensors

2003
The need to measure strain occurs in a variety of industries, ranging from aerospace design to civil engineering to traffic sensors to robotic manipulators. Measuring the deflection of a structure gives design engineers data needed to build safer and more efficient systems. Typical measurements can be approximately an inch of deflection over a 100 foot
