Alcohol‐induced altered glycans in human tracheal epithelial cells promote bacterial adhesion

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Alcohol induces altered glycans to promote bacteria adhesion. Heavy alcohol drinking is known to increase the risk of bacterial pneumonia. However, the link between alcohol levels and risk of infection remains underexplored. Recently, we found that alcohol induced α2‐6sialo mucin O‐glycans in human tracheobronchial epithelial cells, which mediated the ...

THE EFFECT OF SELECTED MATERIAL PARAMETERS ON THE STRESS AND STRAIN STATES IN THE PROCESS OF CUTTING A SHEET PLATE WITH CIRCULAR CUTTERS

open access: yesTASK Quarterly, 2006
The influence of the type of material on deformations and stresses of sheet metal in the process of cutting with numerical tools is presented. The Cowper-Symonds model is used to describe the properties of cut sheet-plate and the influence of two ...

In vitro markers for virulence in Yersinia ruckeri [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
In this study, different traits that have been associated with bacterial virulence were studied in Yersinia ruckeri. Two isolates that had been shown to cause disease and mortality in experimentally infected rainbow trout were compared with five ...

Nuclear pore links Fob1‐dependent rDNA damage relocation to lifespan control

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Damaged rDNA accumulates at a specific perinuclear interface that couples nucleolar escape with nuclear envelope association. Nuclear pores at this site help inhibit Fob1‐induced rDNA instability. This spatial organization of damage handling supports a functional link between nuclear architecture, rDNA stability, and replicative lifespan in yeast.

How granular materials deform in quasistatic conditions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Based on numerical simulations of quasistatic deformation of model granular materials, two rheological regimes are distinguished, according to whether macroscopic strains merely reflect microscopic material strains within the grains in their contact ...

C2α‐carbanion‐protonating glutamate discloses tradeoffs between substrate accommodation and reaction rate in actinobacterial 2‐hydroxyacyl‐CoA lyase

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Enzymes of the 2‐hydroxyacyl‐CoA lyase group catalyze the condensation of formyl‐CoA with aldehydes or ketones. Thus, by structural adaptation of active sites, practically any pharmaceutically and industrially important 2‐hydroxyacid could be biotechnologically synthesized. Combining crystal structure analysis, active site mutations and kinetic assays,

Study of the Physiological Responses of Two Strains of Laying Hens under Thermal Challenge

open access: yesBiology and Life Sciences Forum
The breeding of laying hens has been profoundly transformed by various factors from genetic selection to the development of infrastructure, including nutritional and health management, making this activity a pillar of the food chain. However, temperature

Erythropoietin modulates hepatic inflammation, glucose homeostasis, and soluble epoxide hydrolase and epoxides in high‐fat diet‐induced obese mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Erythropoietin administration suppresses hepatic soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) expression, leading to increased CYP‐derived epoxides. This is associated with a shift in hepatic macrophage polarization characterized by reduced M1 markers and increased M2 markers, along with reduced hepatic inflammation, suppressed hepatic lipogenesis, and attenuated ...

The impact of cementing technique in polished taper fit hip stems: a modelling analysis of implant-cement interface

open access: yesBone & Joint Research
Aims: Cemented polished taper fit (PTF) stems are the femoral implant of choice for total hip arthroplasty (THA) in many locations worldwide. There is increasing evidence that periprosthetic fracture may be the single major contributor to reoperation ...

Exon 7 splicing of ERα predicts poor prognosis and increases phenotypic heterogeneity in luminal a subtype breast cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
ERα splice variant ERα∆7 lacks the C‐terminus, and its expression may change phenotypes of breast cancers. Our results showed that ERα∆7 is found in the luminal A subtype, and elevated ERα∆7 levels are linked to improved cell survival with lower proliferation and migration.
