A solid state fungal fermentation-based strategy for the hydrolysis of wheat straw [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This paper reports a solid-state fungal fermentation-based pre-treatment strategy to convert wheat straw into a fermentable hydrolysate. Aspergillus niger was firstly cultured on wheat straw for production of cellulolytic enzymes and then the wheat straw

Acidogenic fermentation of pretreated food waste under psychrophilic conditions for volatile fatty acids production

open access: yesBiofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, EarlyView.
Abstract Mixed‐culture fermentation generally produces volatile fatty acids (VFAs) as a mixture of C2–C6 acids. Among operational parameters, temperature has a distinct effect on the microorganisms' metabolic activity, which can shift the composition of the metabolites.

Long-term straw incorporation benefits the elevation of soil phosphorus availability and use efficiency in the agroecosystem

open access: yesSpanish Journal of Agricultural Research, 2018
Soil pH and organic matter are important factors influencing phosphorus (P) fertilizer use efficiency. Long-term crop straw incorporation alters soil pH and soil organic matter.

Incorporating straw may induce sulfide toxicity in paddy rice [PDF]

open access: yesCalifornia Agriculture, 2003
Sulfide toxicity to rice plants has been randomly observed in isolated sites in rice fields and experimental plots in the Sacramento Valley. Plants suffering from sulfide toxicity show signs of retarded growth and reduced yields, including the characteristic blackened roots and, in the most severe cases, death.

Driving continuous improvement of sustainability certification for industrial biobased systems through comprehensive sustainability requirements

open access: yesBiofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, EarlyView.
Abstract Existing monitoring frameworks for sustainability certification schemes and labels (CSLs) have largely prioritised environmental aspects, while the social and economic pillars of sustainability remain comparatively underdeveloped. Also, dedicated circularity requirements tailored to biobased systems are still largely lacking, despite being ...

Circular economy assessment of biomethane value chain in Brazil

open access: yesBiofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, EarlyView.
Abstract From the numerous opportunities to add value to biomass in Brazil, biomethane production in sugarcane mills presents significant potential. This study introduces a diagnostic framework grounded in circular economy (CE) principles to assess new biomethane projects, aligning with the strategic objectives of product diversification, full biomass ...

Optimization of the dilute maleic acid pretreatment of wheat straw [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Background In this study, the dilute maleic acid pretreatment of wheat straw is optimized, using pretreatment time, temperature and maleic acid concentration as design variables. A central composite design was applied to the experimental set up.

Tensions of Sustainability Logics: Performance of a Company Utilizing a Sustainable Business Model

open access: yesBusiness Strategy and the Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In recent years, companies have used sustainable business models to gain a competitive advantage. However, there are tensions due to the inconsistency between social, environmental, and economic logic in sustainable business models, making it difficult for companies to change. To understand the existing tensions and interactions between logics,
