Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Quasi-3D Calculation of Stray Losses in Outer Lamination Stack of Power Transformer Core

open access: yesIEEE Access
This paper presents a quasi-3D method for calculating stray losses in the outer lamination stacks of a power transformer core. The method uses multiple 2D FEM models in several steps to capture the 3D nature of the problem.

Simulation and optimization of beam losses during continuous transfer extraction at the CERN Proton Synchrotron

open access: yesPhysical Review Special Topics. Accelerators and Beams, 2011
The proton beams used for the fixed target physics at the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) are extracted from the Proton Synchrotron (PS) by a multiturn technique called continuous transfer (CT).

Quantum-limited measurements of optical signals from a geostationary satellite

open access: yes, 2017
The measurement of quantum signals that traveled through long distances is of fundamental and technological interest. We present quantum-limited coherent measurements of optical signals, sent from a satellite in geostationary Earth orbit to an optical ...

PICALM::MLLT10 translocated leukemia

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This comprehensive review of PICALM::MLLT10 translocated acute leukemia provides an in‐depth review of the structure and function of CALM, AF10, and the fusion oncoprotein (1). The multifaceted molecular mechanisms of oncogenesis, including nucleocytoplasmic shuttling (2), epigenetic modifications (3), and disruption of endocytosis (4), are then ...

Determining the Positions and Dimensions of Horizontal Magnetic Shunts in Transformer Tank Walls Using Parametric Analyses Based on the Finite Element Method

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Magnetic shunts efficiently mitigate losses caused by leakage currents in the tank walls of power transformers. Transformer manufacturers frequently utilize vertical magnetic shunts positioned on the inside surfaces of the transformer tank walls.

Eddy Current Pulsed Thermography with Different Excitation Configurations for Metallic Material and Defect Characterization

open access: yesSensors, 2016
This paper reviews recent developments of eddy current pulsed thermography (ECPT) for material characterization and nondestructive evaluation (NDE). Due to the fact that line-coil-based ECPT, with the limitation of non-uniform heating and a restricted ...

Progress in satellite quantum key distribution

open access: yes, 2017
Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a family of protocols for growing a private encryption key between two parties. Despite much progress, all ground-based QKD approaches have a distance limit due to atmospheric losses or in-fibre attenuation.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.
