Cosmological two-stream instability

open access: yesPhysics Letters B, 2012
Two-stream instability requires, essentially, two things to operate: a relative flow between two fluids and some type of interaction between them. In this letter we provide the first demonstration that this mechanism may be active in a cosmological context.

Dissipation Triggers Dynamical Two-Stream Instability [PDF]

open access: yesParticles, 2019
Two coupled, interpenetrating fluids suffer instabilities beyond certain critical counterflows. For ideal fluids, an energetic instability occurs at the point where a sound mode inverts its direction due to the counterflow, while dynamical instabilities only occur at larger relative velocities.

Streaming Instability for Particle-size Distributions [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters, 2019
Abstract The streaming instability is thought to play a central role in the early stages of planet formation by enabling the efficient bypass of a number of barriers hindering the formation of planetesimals. We present the first study exploring the efficiency of the linear streaming instability when a particle-size distribution is ...

Ion alfvén velocity fluctuations and implications for the diffusion of streaming cosmic rays

open access: yesFrontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences, 2022
The interstellar medium (ISM) of star-forming galaxies is magnetized and turbulent. Cosmic rays (CRs) propagate through it, and those with energies from ∼ GeV − TeV are likely subject to the streaming instability, whereby the wave damping processes ...

Baryon loading and the Weibel instability in gamma-ray bursts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The dynamics of two counter-streaming electron-positron-ion unmagnetized plasma shells with zero net charge is analyzed in the context of magnetic field generation in GRB internal shocks due to the Weibel instability.

Layer-Assisted Video Quality Adaptation for Improving QoE in Wireless Networks

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2020
HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS) is a state-of-the-art technology for video streaming. Optimal adaptive streaming schemes should be designed to maximize the quality of experience (QoE) in network environments with unstable bandwidths such as wireless ...

Two-dimensional electrostatic solitary structures in electron–positron plasmas

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2015
Due to the inertia symmetry the issue of whether electrostatic solitons may possibly form in pair plasmas has been addressed in a number of papers.

Mean flow instabilities of two-dimensional convection in strong magnetic fields [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The interaction of magnetic fields with convection is of great importance in astrophysics. Two well-known aspects of the interaction are the tendency of convection cells to become narrow in the perpendicular direction when the imposed field is strong ...

Onset of Fast Magnetic Reconnection via Subcritical Bifurcation

open access: yesFrontiers in Physics, 2015
We report a phase transition model for the onset of fast magnetic reconnection. By investigating the joint dynamics of streaming instability(i.e., current driven ion acoustic in this paper) and current gradient driven whistler wave {color{blue} {prior to

The superfluid two-stream instability [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2004
This paper provides the first study of a new dynamical instability in superfluids. This instability is similar to the two-stream instability known to operate in plasmas. It is analogous to the Kelvin‐Helmholtz instability, but has the distinguishing feature that the two fluids are interpenetrating. The instability sets in once the relative flow between
