Differential effects of stimulus strength and volitional control in bistable perception [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Neuroscience, 2014
Bistable perception has been widely studied in the visual system where ambiguity in sensory information coming from, for example, binocular, depth or motion cues leads to spontaneous shifts in perception. Indeed, modeling of rivalrous dynamics induced by ambiguity in these visual sensory cues led to a generalized Levelt’s proposition II that describes ...

Increased Risk of Sarcomas in Children With Congenital Anomalies: Findings From the Genetic Overlap Between Anomalies and Cancer in Kids (GOBACK) Registry Linkage Study

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Pediatric sarcomas are a heterogeneous group of tumors that contribute disproportionately to cancer mortality in children. Although congenital anomalies are among the strongest known risk factors for childhood cancer, the risk of specific sarcoma subtypes among affected individuals has not yet been thoroughly evaluated. Procedure We

Eye opening differentially modulates inhibitory synaptic transmission in the developing visual cortex

open access: yeseLife, 2017
Eye opening, a natural and timed event during animal development, influences cortical circuit assembly and maturation; yet, little is known about its precise effect on inhibitory synaptic connections.

A Bibliometric Analysis of Publications in Uremic Toxins From 1991 to 2024

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Uremic toxins are a growing area of research in nephrology, with significant implications in the progression and treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the management of end‐stage kidney disease (ESKD). This bibliometric analysis aims to evaluate the global research trends, key contributors, and the impact of publications in ...

The effect of temperature on strength differential and material effort of steam turbine rotors [PDF]

open access: yesAIP Conference Proceedings, 2020
The paper presents the results of mechanical tensile and compression tests performed at a range of temperatures on specimens made from 2%CrMoV steel. Variation of strength differential coefficent was found and considered in numerical analyses of material effort of a steam turbine rotor subject to thermomechanical loading.

Serum Myonectin Levels Are Positively Associated With Physical Function and Lower Frailty‐Related Limitation in Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients: A Cross‐Sectional Study

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients frequently suffer from frailty, characterized by reduced physical function and poor prognosis. Myokines, such as myonectin, secreted by muscle, are emerging regulators of systemic health. This study investigated the relationship between serum myonectin, adipokines (adiponectin, omentin), and ...

Effect of bedding mortar with low strength and high entrained air content on the strain and failure mode of masonry prisms under compression [PDF]

open access: yesREM: International Engineering Journal
Brazilian standards regarding structural masonry does not consider the effect of bedding mortar properties on the strength and failure mode of masonry. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of bedding mortars with low strength and ...

Blended cement hydration assessment by thermogravimetric analysis and isothermal calorimetry

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2018
In the present study, the hydration of Portland cement pastes containing 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% tuff, limestone filler and granodiorite was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis coupled with differential scanning calorimetry and microcalorimetry ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.
