Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome following total thyroidectomy

open access: yesThe Annals of The Royal College of Surgeons of England, 2013
Group A streptococcal toxic shock syndrome following clean surgery is a rare occurrence. Its incidence following thyroid surgery has not been described in the literature. We report on the presentation and management of severe streptococcal toxic shock syndrome following a total thyroidectomy for a multinodular goitre in a patient with Cowden syndrome.

MAIT cells launch a rapid, robust and distinct hyperinflammatory response to bacterial superantigens and quickly acquire an anergic phenotype that impedes their cognate antimicrobial function: Defining a novel mechanism of superantigen-induced immunopathology and immunosuppression [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Superantigens (SAgs) are potent exotoxins secreted by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. They target a large fraction of T cell pools to set in motion a "cytokine storm" with severe and sometimes life-threatening consequences typically ...

Streptococcal Toxic Shock-Like Syndrome

open access: yesAnnals of Surgery, 1993
Pyrogenic exotoxins A, B, and C produced by group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (Streptococcus pyogenes) may cause a syndrome characterized by fever, rash, desquamation, hypotension, and multi-organ-system dysfunction. This syndrome, the streptococcal toxic shock-like syndrome (TSLS), has a rapid and fulminant course closely resembling the ...
