Properties of L-streptococci in comparison with those of A-streptococci
Medical Microbiology and Immunology, 1987Despite some similarities, L-streptococci could be clearly differentiated from A-streptococci. Formamide, autoclaved and nitrous acid extracts of all L-streptococcal cultures studied reacted only with their specific antisera and did not cross-react with any other group specific streptococcal antigens.

Streptococci pose difficulties in laboratory and clinical diagnosis and in therapy. They are important pathogens with both potential for high mortality in acute infections and endocarditis, and recurrence and persistence in foreign-body associated infections. Prevention of serious infection and spread of infection pose a number of hospital problems but

The ecology of the streptococci
Microbial Ecology, 1982All species of streptococci are divided into several groups according to the ecological niches they occupy. Members of the lactic acid group are found only in the plant environment and the dairy. Members of the pyogenic group and the buccal and intestinal residents of the subthermophilic group are found in intimate association only with homeothermic ...

Streptococci as Urinary Pathogens
Journal of Urology, 1986In a 2-month prospective study of streptococci isolated from urine specimens in the laboratory, 242 strains of catalase-negative gram-positive cocci or coccobacilli were isolated in substantial numbers from 11,725 specimens. These comprised 10% of the important isolates. Species identification of all isolates was undertaken.

Besides Staphylococcus aureus, other Gram-positive bacteria have become multidrug-resistant and cause therapeutic problems, particularly amongst hospitalised patients. The acquisition of vancomycin resistance by strains of Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis is of particular concern and has resulted in treatment failures.

Speciation of the “Viridans” Streptococci
American Journal of Clinical Pathology, 1982A simple scheme for the speciation of clinical isolates of "viridans" streptococci based on nine physiological characteristics is presented. Use of this scheme will enable successful speciation of most "viridans" strep isolates in any laboratory and allow for the accumulation of data necessary for the definition of clinical syndromes or unique clinical

Molecular Cloning in the Streptococci
1982The genus Streptococcus contains a large number of species able to cause infection in humans and in animals. Our research efforts have revolved around the study of streptococci that normally reside in the human oral cavity. In this regard, Streptococcus mutans is thought to play an important role in the etiology of dental caries (tooth decay) in humans
