Difficult streptococci

Journal of Hospital Infection, 1988
Streptococci pose difficulties in laboratory and clinical diagnosis and in therapy. They are important pathogens with both potential for high mortality in acute infections and endocarditis, and recurrence and persistence in foreign-body associated infections. Prevention of serious infection and spread of infection pose a number of hospital problems but

Streptococci as Urinary Pathogens

Journal of Urology, 1986
In a 2-month prospective study of streptococci isolated from urine specimens in the laboratory, 242 strains of catalase-negative gram-positive cocci or coccobacilli were isolated in substantial numbers from 11,725 specimens. These comprised 10% of the important isolates. Species identification of all isolates was undertaken.

Streptococci target inflammasome

Nature Microbiology, 2017
The Streptococcus pyogenes surface M protein is a critical multifunctional virulence factor. Recent work sheds light on a new unexpected function of the M protein in activating the host inflammasome to induce macrophage cell death and promote infection.

Enterococci and streptococci

International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents, 2007
Besides Staphylococcus aureus, other Gram-positive bacteria have become multidrug-resistant and cause therapeutic problems, particularly amongst hospitalised patients. The acquisition of vancomycin resistance by strains of Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis is of particular concern and has resulted in treatment failures.

Satellite Streptococci

JAMA, 1979
In three of the 20 patients with bacterial endocarditis in our institution since 1975, satellite streptococci were recovered from the blood stream (15%). These organisms do not grow under usual laboratory conditions and may only be demonstrable after fortuitous contamination of the media.
