Distribution and activity of nitrate and nitrite reductases in the microbiota of the human intestinal tract

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Nitrate from food is first converted to nitrite by oral bacteria and then further processed in the intestine. The gut microbiota reduces nitrate and nitrite to ammonia or nitric oxide, preventing the formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines. Our analysis highlights Escherichia coli as a key player in this detoxification process, supported by other ...

Crystal structure of plant γ‐glutamyl peptidase 1: implications for sulfur metabolism and secondary metabolite biosynthesis

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
The crystal structures of Arabidopsis thaliana γ‐glutamyl peptidase 1 (GGP1), including the covalent intermediate state, were determined. GGP1 is involved in both glutathione degradation in the primary metabolism and glutathione conjugate processing in the secondary metabolism of glucosinolate and camalexin biosynthesis.

A distinct sortase SrtB anchors and processes a streptococcal adhesin AbpA with a novel structural property. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Surface display of proteins by sortases in Gram-positive bacteria is crucial for bacterial fitness and virulence. We found a unique gene locus encoding an amylase-binding adhesin AbpA and a sortase B in oral streptococci.

Reduction of Salivary Streptococcus mutans Colonies in Children After Rinsing with 2.5% Green Tea Solution

open access: yesJournal of Dentistry Indonesia, 2015
Dental caries is a problematic area in pediatric dentistry, with Streptococcus mutans as the dominant bacterial cause. Green tea solution and chlorhexidine were effective in reducing the number of Streptococcus mutans.

Polymicrobial oral biofilm models: simplifying the complex [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Over the past century, numerous studies have used oral biofilm models to investigate growth kinetics, biofilm formation, structure and composition, antimicrobial susceptibility and host–pathogen interactions.

Antimicrobial peptide GH12 suppresses cariogenic virulence factors of Streptococcus mutans

open access: yesJournal of Oral Microbiology, 2018
Cariogenic virulence factors of Streptococcus mutans include acidogenicity, aciduricity, and extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) synthesis. The de novo designed antimicrobial peptide GH12 has shown bactericidal effects on S.

Interprofessional Learning and Oral Health‐Related Attitudes and Knowledge Among Nursing Students at a University in Sweden—An Exploratory Study

open access: yesInternational Journal of Dental Hygiene, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aim To evaluate an interprofessional learning (IPL) session involving dental hygiene students and nursing students and to investigate the nursing students' oral health‐related knowledge and attitudes. Material and Method First, a questionnaire about knowledge and attitudes regarding oral health was answered by 84 nursing students. After an IPL

A comparative evaluation of Oratest with the microbiological method of assessing caries activity in children

open access: yesJournal of Pharmacy and Bioallied Sciences, 2013
Aims: The aim of this study is to find out whether Oratest can be used as a diagnostic tool in assessing the caries activity by evaluating its relationship to the existing caries status and the salivary streptococcus mutans level.

Fluoride resistance in Streptococcus mutans: a mini review

open access: yesJournal of Oral Microbiology, 2017
For decades, fluoride has been used extensively as an anti-caries agent. It not only protects dental hard tissue, but also inhibits bacterial growth and metabolism.
