A comparative evaluation of Oratest with the microbiological method of assessing caries activity in children

open access: yesJournal of Pharmacy and Bioallied Sciences, 2013
Aims: The aim of this study is to find out whether Oratest can be used as a diagnostic tool in assessing the caries activity by evaluating its relationship to the existing caries status and the salivary streptococcus mutans level.

Adhesion Forces of Dextran on Dental Enamel as a Function of Contact Time and pH Value

open access: yesphysica status solidi (a), EarlyView.
Dextran exhibits sawtooth‐shaped retraction curves on dental enamel, indicating multiple interaction points. Adhesion forces increase with contact time (0.35 nN at 10 s to >1.5 nN at 120 s) and are independent of pH (pH 4.5–13). Comparisons with other surfaces show that adhesion on enamel is lower but statistically insignificant at the 0.05 level ...

Reduction of Salivary Streptococcus mutans Colonies in Children After Rinsing with 2.5% Green Tea Solution

open access: yesJournal of Dentistry Indonesia, 2015
Dental caries is a problematic area in pediatric dentistry, with Streptococcus mutans as the dominant bacterial cause. Green tea solution and chlorhexidine were effective in reducing the number of Streptococcus mutans.

A structural basis for the strain‐dependent UDP‐sugar specificity of glycosyltransferase C from the Limosilactobacillus reuteri accessory secretion system

open access: yesActa Crystallographica Section D, EarlyView.
X‐ray crystal structures of glycosyltransferase C from the Limosilactobacillus reuteri 100‐23 (LrGtfC100‐23) accessory secretion system were determined in its apo form and in complexes with UDP and with UDP‐N‐acetylglucosamine, which revealed candidate residues involved in strain‐specific recognition of UDP‐sugars.

Service evaluation to establish the sensitivity, specificity and additional value of broad-range 16S rDNA PCR for the diagnosis of infective endocarditis from resected endocardial material in patients from eight UK and Ireland hospitals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Infective endocarditis (IE) can be diagnosed in the clinical microbiology laboratory by culturing explanted heart valve material. We present a service evaluation that examines the sensitivity and specificity of a broad-range 16S rDNA polymerase chain ...

Repeat Intraocular Sampling and Microbiological Testing in Infectious Endophthalmitis: A 27‐Year Prospective Observational Study at an Australian Statewide Tertiary Referral Centre

open access: yesClinical &Experimental Ophthalmology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Endophthalmitis requiring multiple ocular tissue sampling for microbiological testing is uncommon and has not been previously studied. This study aims to analyse cases with at least two ocular tissue samplings and testing of different ocular samples against culture yields. Methods A 27‐year prospective observational study using data

The effect of silver-ion water on the growth of Streptococcus mutans

open access: yesIndonesian Journal of Dental Medicine
Background: Caries is a multifactorial disease that often occurs in the oral cavity and can be caused by Streptococcus mutans. Various ways have been done to reduce the number of Streptococcus mutans, one of them is by exposing them to a material agent ...

Effect of cassava (Manihot esculenta cranzt), rice (Oryza sativa L.), and potato (Solanum tuberosum) water extract to decrease pH phase fermentation of Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175

open access: yesPadjadjaran Journal of Dentistry, 2019
Introduction: Dental caries is the localised damage of the hard tooth tissue caused by acid production results of carbohydrate fermentation by acid-producing bacteria. Streptococcus mutans are one of the aetiological bacteria which fermented carbohydrate
