Restoration of human tooth enamel

open access: yesBMEMat, EarlyView.
Human tooth enamel has remarkable properties but lacks self‐repair ability. Existing restorative materials cannot fully replicate enamel's microstructure and function, resulting in low restorative efficiency. This review summarizes the formation process and characteristics of enamel, and current restorative materials and future research directions are ...

Decreased cariogenicity of a mutant of Streptococcus mutans [PDF]

open access: yesArchives of Oral Biology, 1971
A strain of Streptococcus mutans was treated with a mutagenic agent. This resulted in isolation of a mutant which, compared to the original strain, had lost the ability to form sticky deposits on hard surfaces in sucrose medium. Apart from colonial morphology, the mutant had not changed in any other characteristic studied.

Glycosyltransferase-Mediated Biofilm Matrix Dynamics and Virulence of Streptococcus mutans

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Microbiology, 2018
Tooth decay, a costly and painful disease affecting the vast majority of people worldwide, is caused by the bacterium Streptococcus mutans. The bacteria utilize dietary sugars to build and strengthen biofilms, trapping acids onto the tooth’s surface and ...

Relatedness and Classification of Streptococcus mutans and "Mutans-like" Streptococci

open access: yesJournal of Dental Research, 1984
The "mutans-like" streptococci can be separated into five species (Streptococcus mutans, S. rattus, S. sobrinus, S. cricetus, and S. ferus ) that belong to the same rRNA homology cluster. New valuable chemical characters for differentiation of the five species - such as peptidoglycan type, presence of cell wall teichoic acid, and cell wall sugar ...

Evidence for a disseminated plasmid in Streptococcus mutans [PDF]

open access: yesInfection and Immunity, 1978
Based on a survey of 86 isolates, approximately 5% of all naturally occurring strains of Streptococcus mutans contains a 3.6 X 10(6)-dalton (3.6-megadalton) multicopy plasmid of unknown function. The amount of plasmid deoxyribonucleic acid per chromosome varies from 2 to 6% depending on the host strain. About 13% of the total covalently closed circular
