Comparative study of adenosine 3′‐pyrophosphokinase domains of MuF polymorphic toxins
With the ultimate goal of understanding the association of toxin‐immunity modules to temperate phages, we characterized toxins from three prophages and examined cross‐protection from immunity proteins. The toxins exhibit adenosine 3′‐pyrophosphokinase activity and are toxic in Escherichia coli.

NOD2 Expression in Streptococcus pneumoniae Meningitis and Its Influence on the Blood-Brain Barrier
Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis is one of the most common disorders seen in clinical practice. It is believed that the brain tissue immune injury is caused by the expression of pattern-recognition receptors (PRR) which can further induce the release ...

Prediction of Pneumonia and COVID-19 Using Deep Neural Networks [PDF]
Pneumonia, caused by bacteria and viruses, is a rapidly spreading viral infection with global implications. Prompt identification of infected individuals is crucial for containing its transmission. This study explores the potential of medical image analysis to address this challenge.

SMC is recruited to oriC by ParB and promotes chromosome segregation in Streptococcus pneumoniae [PDF]
Segregation of replicated chromosomes is an essential process in all organisms. How bacteria, such as the oval-shaped human pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae, efficiently segregate their chromosomes is poorly understood.

Biofilm formation in Streptococcus pneumoniae [PDF]
SummaryBiofilm‐grown bacteria are refractory to antimicrobial agents and show an increased capacity to evade the host immune system. In recent years, studies have begun on biofilm formation by Streptococcus pneumoniae, an important human pathogen, using a variety of in vitro model systems.

Efflux‐mediated resistance compromises antibiotic efficacy, yet rapid detection remains elusive. This study presents a novel phenazinium‐based diagnostic molecule for quantifying bacterial efflux levels in Gram‐positive pathogens. The optimized compound enables precise, real‐time efflux assessment using fluorescence and colorimetric techniques ...

Variation at the capsule locus, cps, of mistyped and non-typable Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates [PDF]
The capsule polysaccharide locus (cps) is the site of the capsule biosynthesis gene cluster in encapsulated Streptococcus pneumoniae. A set of pneumococcal samples and non-pneumococcal streptococci from Denmark, the Gambia, the Netherlands, Thailand, the

THE PNEUMONIAS: STREPTOCOCCUS AND PNEUMOCOCCUS GROUPS [PDF]
A conference of medical officers from Fort Sam Houston and Camp Travis was held, Jan. 3, 1918, for the purpose of considering the pneumonia situation. Various points in the determination of the causative organism in pneumonia following measles were considered, methods of procedure were suggested, and the laboratory force was organized to take up the ...

Regulation of neuraminidase expression in Streptococcus pneumoniae [PDF]
Abstract Background Sialic acid (N-acetylneuraminic acid; NeuNAc) is one of the most important carbohydrates for Streptococcus pneumoniae due of its role as a carbon and energy source, receptor for adhesion and invasion and molecular signal for promotion of biofilm formation, nasopharyngeal carriage and invasion of ...
