The Gut Resistome Atlas in Preterm Infants Enables Prediction of Necrotizing Enterocolitis Onset
The gut resistome of preterm infants and its clinical relevance remain poorly understood. This study performs in‐depth integrative analyses of 5,684 gut metagenomes from preterm infants, uncovering distinct features that diverge from term infants. Notably, the gut resistome of preterm infants converges 9 days before necrotizing enterocolitis onset ...

A role for Streptococcus pneumoniae in virus-associated pneumonia [PDF]
Here we show, in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial in 37,107 fully immunized infants in Soweto, South Africa, that a 9-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, PncCV, prevents 31% (95% confidence interval = 15-43%) of pneumonias associated with any of seven respiratory viruses in children in hospital.

Resistance decay in individuals after antibiotic exposure in primary care: A systematic review and meta-analysis [PDF]
Background Antibiotic resistance is an urgent global problem, but reversibility is poorly understood. We examined the development and decay of bacterial resistance in community patients after antibiotic use.

ApuA, a multifunctional x-glucan-degrading enzyme of Streptococcus suis, mediates adhesion to porcine epithelium and mucus [PDF]
We have identified apuA in Streptococcus suis, which encodes a bifunctional amylopullulanase with conserved -amylase and pullulanase substrate-binding domains and catalytic motifs.

Refractory status epilepticus (RSE) is a life‐threatening neurological emergency with high rates of death and long‐term disability, but treatments for it are often based on limited evidence. RSE is now understood to involve neuroinflammation, which has led to the exploration of anti‐inflammatory and immunomodulatory agents like Tocilizumab. Traditional
