Approximate dimensions of membrane lesions produced by streptolysin S and streptolysin O

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes, 1983
Membrane lesions produced by the streptococcal membranolysins streptolysin S and streptolysin O were investigated. Escape of labeled marker molecules of various sizes from resealed sheep erythrocyte ghosts treated with the toxins for 30 min allowed estimation of the sizes of the primary channels formed.

Kinetics of Streptolysin O Self-Assembly

European Journal of Biochemistry, 1995
Streptolysin O is a member of a family of membrane‐damaging toxins that bind to cell membranes containing cholesterol and then polymerize to form large pores. We have examined the kinetics of toxin action using 125I‐labelled streptolysin O. Binding of toxin monomers to membranes displays first‐order kinetics and is reversible; the rate of desorption ...

Cholesterol-Streptolysin O Interaction: An EM Study of Wild-Type and Mutant Streptolysin O

Journal of Structural Biology, 1998
We present transmission electron microscopical data from negatively stained specimens of cholesterol following interaction with the thiol-activated bacterial toxin streptolysin O (SLO) (wild-type and a number of cysteine substitution mutants), with and without chemical modification of the cysteine residues.

Influence of streptolysin S on lymphocyte functions

Current Microbiology, 1980
Streptolysin S, which was found to be cytotoxic for mouse and human lymphocytes and particularly for their T subpopulation, was also shown to affect some of the functions ascribed to T lymphocytes. In vitro studies demonstrated that streptolysin S-pretreated lymphocytes exhibited reduced responsiveness to phytohemagglutinin and decreased lymphokine ...

Streptolysin (Streptococcus pyogenes)

1997
Abstract Streptolysin O (SLO) is produced by beta-hemolytic streptococci. It belongs to the group of thiol-activated toxins, a large family of homologous cytolysins which are secreted by gram-positive bacteria and share extensive homology (Alouf and Geoffroy 1991).
