Acoustoelastic imaging of stress fields

An acoustic technique for measuring inhomogeneous stress in externally loaded solids is described. This method requires a measurement of transit time of a longitudinal acoustic wave through a stressed thin metal specimen using a small-diameter water-coupled acoustic transducer.

The microscopic stress field inhomogeneity in the interfacial region adjacent to the liquid surface is the fundamental origin of the liquid surface tension, but because of broadening due to capillary fluctuations, a detailed molecular level understanding of the stress field remains elusive.

An elastic body, free from body forces is held at rest under the action of known tractions. If \(T\) be the symmetric stress tensor of the field, then it is known that the \(L^2\)-norm of \(T\) can be estimated from below in terms of only the traction field and the geometry of the region.
