Numerical approach for a continuum theory with higher stress gradients [PDF]
AbstractWe use an extended balance of linear momentum derived from stress field analysis of higher order terms in power series expansion. Thus, the balance equation accounts for higher gradients of stress in the contiguity of continuum points. Interestingly, it does not coincide with the balance of linear momentum from strain gradient elasticity.

Evaluation of extremely steep residual stress gradients based on a combined approach using laboratory-scale equipment [PDF]
Surface treatments characterized by rapid heating and cooling (e.g. laser hardening) can induce very steep residual stress gradients in the direct vicinity of the area being treated. These gradients cannot be characterized with sufficient accuracy by means of the classical sin2Ψ approach applying angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction.

Stress Gradient Effects on Notched Composite Failure Using a Local-Global Approach [PDF]
Micromechanics based analysis to predict damage initiation in compressively loaded symmetric notched multidirectional laminates under remote uniaxial loading is described. A novel hybrid local-global finite element method in conjunction with the commercial code ABAQUS is used to solve the governing system of equations.

Matrix exponential-based closures for the turbulent subgrid-scale stress tensor [PDF]
Two approaches for closing the turbulence subgrid-scale stress tensor in terms of matrix exponentials are introduced and compared. The first approach is based on a formal solution of the stress transport equation in which the production terms can be ...

A Novel Estimation Approach of Pressure Gradient and Haemodynamic Stresses as Indicators of Pathological Aortic Flow Using Subvoxel Modelling [PDF]
The flow downstream from aortic stenoses is characterised by the onset of shear-induced turbulence that leads to irreversible pressure losses. These extra losses represent an increased resistance that impacts cardiac efficiency. A novel approach is suggested in this study to accurately evaluate the pressure gradient profile along the aorta centreline ...

Generalized Terzaghi’s Effective Stress Equation for Unsaturated Soil: An Independent Phase Balance Approach That Considers a Pore Water Content Gradient [PDF]
The effective stress equation for unsaturated soil is the most important equation in unsaturated soil mechanics. It has been derived by many scholars using different methods. However, none of them considered the gradient of the pore water content, which results in unreasonable force balance equations for different constituent phases in unsaturated soil.
