Strain gradient effects on concrete stress–strain curve [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Structures and Buildings, 2012
The stress–strain characteristic of concrete developed in flexure is one of the essential parameters for the ultimate flexural strength design of reinforced concrete (RC) members. Currently, the stress–strain curve of concrete developed in flexure is obtained by scaling down the uniaxial stress–strain curve.

Physical factors involved in stress-wave-induced cell injury: The effect of stress gradient [PDF]

open access: yesUltrasound in Medicine & Biology, 1995
We have studied the biological effects of ablation-induced stress waves in vitro. Mouse breast sarcoma cells (EMT-6) were exposed to stress waves that differed only in rise time. Two assays were used to determine cell injury: incorporation of tritiated thymidine (viability assay), and transmission electron microscopy (morphology assay).

Gradient Interfaces Induce the Temporal and Spatial Stress Localization in Gradient Network-Structured Metallic Glasses Composites [PDF]

open access: yesMetals
Gradient structure provides an effective approach to improve the combination of high strength and toughness compared to a uniform one. The gradient interfaces or boundaries in gradient-structured metallic glass composites play a crucial role in ...

Tailoring combined impact loading using gradient foam composite projectiles with variable fragment shapes [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports
The combined effects of explosive shock waves and high-velocity fragments pose critical challenges to the structural integrity of protective systems. Traditional experimental approaches often oversimplify the problem, lacking systematic investigation ...

Facilitation and competition deconstructed: a mechanistic modelling approach to the stress gradient hypothesis applied to drylands [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports
Facilitative interactions among species are key in plant communities. While experimental tests support the Stress Gradient Hypothesis (SGH) as an association between facilitation and stress, whether the shape of net effects along stress gradients can be ...

Is notch sensitivity a stress analysis problem? [PDF]

open access: yesFracture and Structural Integrity, 2013
Semi–empirical notch sensitivity factors q have been widely used to properly account for notch effects in fatigue design for a long time. However, the intrinsically empirical nature of this old concept can be avoided by modeling it using sound mechanical

3D thickness effects around notch and crack tip stress/strain fields [PDF]

open access: yesFracture and Structural Integrity, 2015
Notches and cracks are usually approximately modeled as two-dimensional problems using solutions from plane elasticity to quantify localized stress/strain concentration effects around their tips. However, they may be associated with high gradients that

Study on Stress Sensitivity of Ultra-Low Permeability Sandstone Reservoir Considering Starting Pressure Gradient

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2022
When studying the influence of nonlinear seepage on the water flooding development of ultra-low permeability reservoirs, it is difficult to accurately characterize the nonlinear seepage state of ultra-low permeability reservoirs using conventional ...

New method for introducing gradient stress into rock-burst prediction

open access: yesYantu gongcheng xuebao, 2020
During the excavation of underground projects, the tangential stress in the surrounding rock near the cave wall is distributed in a gradient because of the disturbance of excavation unloading in the deep rock mass.
