Metabolites control stress granule disassembly
Nature Cell Biology, 2021Cells respond to stimuli by reorganizing their contents into subcellular structures. New research demonstrates that yeast pyruvate kinase Cdc19 interacts with fructose-1,6-bisphosphate to coordinate disassembly of stress granules. These findings reveal how proteins can directly sense the cellular energy state to facilitate adaptive reorganization.

Yeast stress granules at a glance
Yeast, 2021AbstractThe formation of stress granules (SGs), membraneāless organelles that are composed of mainly messenger ribonucleoprotein assemblies, is the result of a conserved evolutionary strategy to cellular stress. During their formation, which is triggered by robust environmental stress, SGs sequester translationally inactive mRNA molecules, which are ...

Stress granules (SGs) are cytosolic ribonucleoprotein granules that form via a liquid-liquid phase separation in response to environmental stresses such as heat, oxidative, and osmotic changes. Due to the condensation of low complexity, hydrophobic regions in core SG components in these highly dynamic granules, defects in SG maintenance and formation ...

mRNPs: From informosomes to stress granules
Molecular Biology, 2010Eucaryotic cytoplasmic mRNPs named when discovered "informosomes" are intensively investigated now as different mRNP granules. This review contains the data on structure and functioning of these mRNPs. The status of mRNA depends on spectrum of bound proteins and changes by signaling pathways.

Mammalian Stress Granules and Processing Bodies
2007The packaging of cytoplasmic mRNA into discrete RNA granules regulates gene expression by delaying the translation of specific transcripts. Specialized RNA granules found in germ cells direct the timing of maternal mRNA translation to promote germ cell development in the early embryo and establish the germ line for the next generation.

Stress granules are evolutionally conserved ribonucleoprotein structures that are formed in response to various stress stimuli. Recent studies have demonstrated that proteins with low complexity (LC) regions play a critical role for the formation of stress granules.
