SnapShot: Tolerating replication stress
Molecular CellCompletion of DNA replication relies on the ability of replication forks to traverse various types of DNA damage, actively transcribed regions, and structured DNA. The mechanisms enabling these processes are here referred to as DNA damage tolerance pathways.

Cells monitor how well synthesis of new proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is going, and when stressful conditions cause accumulation of unfolded proteins, the unfolded protein response (UPR) is initiated, which signals for appropriate changes in cellular systems. Ito et al .

Drought stress severely limits plant growth and productivity. Traditional plant breeding strategies have made significant contributions to the generation of stress-tolerant plants. The problem in setting-up strategies for generating drought stress tolerant plants is the complex multigenic nature of the tolerance mechanisms.
