Circulating microRNA signatures of cachexia and cancer in Canis familiaris as a comparative oncology model for human disease

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Circulating microRNAs as biomarkers of cachexia and sex‐specific cancer in senior dogs. In 25 client‐owned dogs, four circulating miRNAs (miR‐15a, miR‐15b, miR‐16, miR‐140) were downregulated in cachexia, with miR‐16 the strongest individual biomarker (AUC = 0.899).

Polarization‐resolved femtosecond Vis/IR spectroscopy tailored for resolving weak signals in biological samples using minimal sample volume

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Unique biological samples, such as site‐specific mutant proteins, are available only in limited quantities. Here, we present a polarization‐resolved transient infrared spectroscopy setup with referencing to improve signal‐to‐noise tailored towards tracing small signals. We provide an overview of characterizing the excitation conditions for polarization‐

Edge-Enabled Real-Time Gait Assessment for Degenerative Spinal Disease Using Wearable Inertial Sensors

open access: yesSensors
Gait analysis is used in the diagnosis, rehabilitation, and longitudinal monitoring of degenerative spinal disease (DSD). However, conventional gait assessment commonly depends on subjective visual observation or laboratory-based motion-capture systems ...

A light‐triggered Time‐Resolved X‐ray Solution Scattering (TR‐XSS) workflow with application to protein conformational dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐resolved X‐ray solution scattering captures how proteins change shape in real time under near‐native conditions. This article presents a practical workflow for light‐triggered TR‐XSS experiments, from data collection to structural refinement. Using a calcium‐transporting membrane protein as an example, the approach can be broadly applied to study ...

Analysis of Footstep/Stride Length from Gait Patterns of Dynamic Footprints as a Parameter for Biological Profiling—A Preliminary Study

open access: yesForensic Sciences
In forensic sciences, particularly in forensic anthropology and podiatry, assessing a person’s stature helps create a biological profile that allows for more accurate identification.

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

Real-time forecasting of pathological gait via IMU navigation: a few-shot and generative learning framework for wearable devices

open access: yesDiscover Electronics
Current gait analysis faces challenges in various aspects, including limited and poorly labeled data within existing wearable electronics databases, difficulties in collecting patient data due to privacy concerns, and the inadequacy of the Zero-Velocity ...

YIPFα1A expression is regulated by multilayered molecular mechanisms

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
YIPFα1A, a five‐pass Golgi protein, is regulated at multiple layers. (1) Rare‐codon enrichment drives translation‐coupled mRNA decay. (2) A proximal 3′‐UTR element stabilizes mRNA. (3) A distal 3′‐UTR element included by alternate poly(A) site usage represses translation, which can be overridden by the proximal 3′‐UTR element.

Application of the Deeplabcut for the Analysis and Study on the Crawling Behavior of Henosepilachna Vigintioctopunctata (Fabricius)

open access: yesIEEE Access
Studying insect crawling behavior parameters can provide key data for pest control. This research focuses on the intelligent analysis of crawling behavior parameters using the Epilachna vigintioctopunctata as an example.

Identifying transcription factors controlling the basal expression of human MRP4 highlights a substantial role for Sp1

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The MRP4 transporter exports several drugs and signaling molecules. Here, we identified key promoter elements regulating basal MRP4 expression. Using reporter assays, we defined a conserved region with essential Sp1 and contributory Ets sites, which controlled basal MRP4 expression.
